Gday, I got two cars that need a re spray. One appears to be enamel...
(paint comes straight off with acrylic thinners).
And the other a urethane..I think?...
(I put acrylic thinners on and rubbed on the paint, but nothing cam off) so I asumed it's a urathane.
Anyway, is there a primer sealer that I can use as a barrier on both cars so I can spray acrylic on top?
Cheers.
hey mate usually enamel is solvent resistant so I would say the first car is acrylic. The second car could be 2Pack. Are they factory colours. What cars and year model are they.
Either way you can paint acrylic over acrylic and over 2 pack.
You can't paint 2 pack over acrylic or enamel over anything.
There is a product called barcoat isolator that can go over enamel or 2 pack which will give a barrier for the new paint.
I don't think you well need it but just acrylic primer then paint. I have a few videos and guides on my website if ya need it.
Hope this helps.

Thanks heaps for that info.
The black paint is a 1982 Mazda colour..ZP..(which instantly turned runny
When hit with thinners)... however someone painted the roof and bonnet with a paint that only lightly
comes off with the thinners if u rub hard.
The other is 1967 Toyota colour... but someone painted over the old 60's paint with Woteva it is now that won't come off at all with acrylic thinners, even when rubbing hard? I don't know wot type paint they
sprayed in the 60's either?
The only reason I thought enamel turned runny with thinners, was just something i read while searching a paint site. I personally have no idea. Do you kno of any other methods of checking this?
Cheers again![]()
back then was either acrylic or enamel. Using thinners is the only way to tell without a pro looking at it. To be safe you should just paint strip then etch prime then paint.
