gday guys, on my 18" wheels it has chrome inserts.
the chrome inserts can be detached from the wheel itself, im going to be taking them off and repairing my wheels as all of them have gutter rash, the other part of the wheel is black and i will just respray them.
but i want the whole wheel to be black so im wondering whats the best way to go about spraying these chrome inserts black? because i was told its hard to get paint to stick to chrome.
heres an attached picture of my rims so my thread makes a little bit more sense.

sand it off or scuff it up them put primer and youll be right
use a 2k etch primer first. self etching primers don't always adhere to chrome.
also, is it definitely chrome? i've seen wheels with "chrome" inserts that are just painted plastic.
If its plastic sand back and prime.
yeh they would be plastic... use wet rub 2000 n ensure surface is smooth before painting... but also when ya prime it giv it a coat at a time for best results.... rub bak wiv 2000 ensure smooth n no pits before spraying colour on it...
just wipe over it with prepsol and hit it was an aerosol can. wouldnt waste my time prepping it. you will spend 2 hours sanding and prepping and itll look the same as if i had done it in 2 mins.
yeah was thinking of doing that, also with the rim as well, should i sand my gutter rash back and smooth it out then hit it with prepsol as well?
probably better to get to that with a flat file. depending on how bad it is, you may need a re-balance after.
yeah on one wheel its pretty deep, dont know if i can get it smooth enough.
U could sand that back, but it'll throw out the balance by a shitload. A rim repairer, may fix it filling in the gaps, but may also lathe it back. If they do that?!?
nah ive seen much worse get repaired and it balances up ok. taking the tyre off is pretty much a sure-thing though. tyre off>flat file evenly all the way round> send it off for some 2k (along with the caps)
Can I ask how it will through the balance off? Not that I'm planning to do anything like that but yeah.
Would moving a Lock nut after 5000K's + cause it to throw it out of balance?
Sorry for Hi-jacking.. but was just curious. sorry.
no. wheel nuts are too close to the center of the rolling axis to make a difference. the balance would be thrown off by one side of the outer rim being a slightly different weight to the opposite side. 5grams would do it. which is why you need to flat file it evenly all the way round.
