Hey guys,
My VS SS has extractors, but seems to run a crossover / merge pipe from the extractors to the cats (it is one pipe that joins the extractors in to the Cat)
In short, the balance / crossover / merge pipe is shagged and I would like another!
Failing that I would be after an exhaust, complete, or without extractors (maybe twin cat)
Sorry if this is confusing, I am writing it at work!
Cheers,
Mick
its called a Y pipe.
and each car is differrent basiccaly, would cost $100 tops to get a brand new one made at a exhaust shop.
you wont find anything that will fit second hand.
No Idea mate, just bought the car.... Simple 4-1's
I find it hard to believe that the Y pipe's are ALL different sizes though, doesn't fit with mass production abilities if every 5L had to have a custom one...
I am not interested in having a new one made up as I intend to change the exhaust after I get a RWC...
Then why not just do it how you want now

The reason every Y pipe is different is so you are limited to the brand if you need a new one. Every brand is unique in the way they bolt up.
4-1's on a VS? I think Hi tech are the only ones that do tuned on the VN-VS V8's. If they are tuned, then they won't have a Y pipe, they are designed for a twin system. You may actually find they are interference design, 4-2-1.
I am trying to do it stock for a few reasons:
1 - roadworthy, I don't want this thing to get knocked, then I want to beef up the note into an area where it's legality may be questionable.
2 - cost, I don't have a fortune at the moment (ex Mrs' are expensive)
3 - I am going conservative, as my knowledge is specifically Gen III, there are a lot of variables with the 5L.
The headers are definately 4-1, and I have been told by mates who are 5L nuts that the y pipe is the stock one.
The pipe kinda looks like this

Personally I have never seen tuned length extractors for a 5L that come with a Y pipe, but that doesn't mean they don't exist.
On one of the primary pipes should be a tag that has the brand on it.
It would be a modified job I reckon, most cars that have a similiar set up go into twin pipes off the extractors, they have probably just cut the standard exhaust Y pipe and welded the exhaust bolt brackets on.
The RH pipe cuts across behind the sump and goes into the LH pipe then back to the cat. It is way too short to cut and join to extractors. You can do that to the VS on on a V6, but not a V8.
Seems obvious to me that this car is running HSV spec VN headers and that would make it a HSV enhanced SS, and will have the little factory 4-1's and the factory Y-pipe. In this case any 5 litre VN y pipe will fit but you will need to weld plain flanges on the end and maybe shorten or extend it slightly since the HSV pipes had different flanges later on in llife than the VN
OK, that may be the case. To clear it up, where do the extractors join to the Y pipe? Up in front of the rack or down near the gearbox?
Thanks guys, they join near the GB....
I fixed it though, Plasma'd out the crushed piece and welded in a new curve, looks a treat and got the RWC. Now I can make it louder!
