This might sound a bit strange but...

Wanted a black wagon and picked up one with 27K on the clock - all good.

Metallic Black, but the bloody paint finish is so shiny, wouldn't mind somehow it being a bit duller, the shininess detracts from the nice black...

Is there a good safe way to take the shine back a bit?

Slap on a coat of Vantablack. Should do the trick.

"Vantablack is composed of a forest of vertical tubes which are "grown". When light strikes vantablack, instead of bouncing off, it becomes trapped and is continually deflected among the tubes, eventually becoming absorbed and dissipating into heat.".......................thanks Wikipedia

I'd be very wary of doing that because your car could become a black hole that sucks in everything, and then explode into nothing-ness ending the world as we know it.

If it's got some polish or wax on it from the previous owner than it should wear off in a month or two. You could always clay bar the whole car, that'd remove a fair bit of the polish.
