Hey guys, me and my dad want to fix up his HZ kingswood ute.

atm its got a 253 and a 4 speed manual (aussie 4 i think is the name or something). basically its a tired motor and noisey gearbox, which is why it was retired about 8 years ago.

ideally i want a nice 253 with a 5 speed manual, now do supra 5 speeds fit right up no worries? and the 5 speeds from newer 308's do they match up or do u need modifications, (im talking like a vn 5 speed).

i dont wanna win horsepower heroes, just want it nice and smooth with a good note. so simple is best.

cheers, jason

Pretty sure you'll need a hydraulic clutch for the Supra 5sp. You'll need a Dellow conversion kit including bellhousing, spigot bush, pivot ball/clutch fork/thrust bearing, speedo cable, clutch stuff, custom tailshaft yoke, crossmember and a few other goodies. I forget what exactly. But they do kits with EVERYTHING you need. I think the kit has a hydraulic slave cylinder too.

edit: have some details:

Just a tip it will cost you the same to do up a 304/308 as it will a 253.
Get a Black motor 304/308 and you will then be able to bolt up a factory 5 speed to the car saving a cost of adapting other gearboxes to it and giving you more power :)

so the black motor, is that the older one, or the one from vls, vns etc?

sounds good to me, dad wouldnt mind a 308 either, i wanted to keep it standard if possible.

a T5 fits in without too much worry not sure exactly what is needed tho, a mate of mine runs a complete VN injected V8, T5 and Borg Warner LSD in his H(something) Kingswood ute.

I think any 308 as long as it's turbo pattern. I got a turbo pattern 308 and a trimatic pattern 308, so might go grab some pics a bit l8r so u can see the difference.

But if u start with a 308 block and put the injection top end on, ya can register it and drive it.....where as if ya put the 304 in it, ya have to get it all passed and certified.

you would need to get is engineered anyway as the kingswood never came out with a T5. makes little difference to get the engine certified at the same time.

Would be a lot easier getting a transmission certified then a motor. With the motor you'd have to pass emissions tests, which are one of the most expensive things about getting it done.
