Got a friend with an 04 SV6 that sounds like it is searching for gears any known problems or does it need a service.(pan off new filter &fluid )

Check the fluid level and quality for starters.

Is it a 4 or 5 speed? The 5 speeds are known to be problematic.

VZ Crewman, VZ Cross 8, & ya mum.
SV6 is 5 speed.

Manual convert it. It will be cheaper.
