checking fault codes

hi there been trying to check fault codes on my vt v6 auto by connecting pins 5 and 6 together and engine light stays on doesnt flash at any ideas??

Are you sure you counted right? Pin holes 5&6 counting from top left. Turn the key to on but don't start it.

yes 5 and 6 even tryed connecting to the wires from the back of the plug still nothing.

Did you connect the pins before turning to the on position?

yes connected before turning on.
