My wife has been telling me for weeks now her steering wheel seems loose. I checked it out today and if you hold the wheel with hands at 9 and 3 oclock position you can move the wheel left and right about 3 or 4mm. If I hold the wheel at the top and bottom I can move it up and down the same amount. Does this indicate a loose steering wheel or worn bushes in the steering column and is this something I can fix myself or does it need to go to holden.

possible bearing on the steering column, does the steering wheel move in and out, hold at 9-3 and push pull, the wheel is splined and has one larger spline to align correctly if you take it off, connection of the intermediate shaft to rack, column support bolts top and bottom

The wheel wont move in or out only side to side and up and down. I might see if I can find what it is. Is there a write up on removing the air bag. If I do that it will rule out a loose nut holding the wheel (apart from me).

With a defective steering your vehicle may potentially be a threat to other motorists and pedestrians. Please get it checked by an accredited mechanic before something goes really wrong. In the meantime, please don't drive it on a road (OK if you want to drive on private property or go paddock bashing etc)

Seriously WTF Benboy? Do you even think before you post? Who paddock bashes a VE that their wife drives? Do you think he doesn't realise the wheel may be a 'threat' hence why hes asking for help on here? (Thats the job of this forum, to help others funny enough)
Why do you feel the need for posting stupid warnings/disclaimers on everyone's posts? This is whats wrong with Australia these days, this sort of garbage.
    /End rant.

Thanks for worrying Benboy but my wife isn't driving the car as we have a runaround car she can use and I definitely wont be bush bashing it because she will skull bash me. I don't have time to look at it this weekend so I have booked it in to Holden so they can diagnose it for me. As soon as I saw how bad it was I took the keys off her so she can not put her life or anyone else's life in danger. Dans_vz I thought it was funny when I read benboys post. I almost spat my coffee all over the monitor. I had a good laugh. No harm done.

Update time. Car went to holden to check out the issue. They found the bolt holding the wheel on had come loose. They told me it could have been 2 possible scenarios. 1 it was never done up tight enough when the car was made and worked its way loose, (highly unlikely) or 2 the previous owner or mechanic has had the wheel off for some reason and didn't do up the bolt tight enough. All good now and wife is safe and cost me $120 to get done. If the wife is happy everyone is happy.

Well said mate, posting stupid warnings & disclaimers seems to be his thing.
I'm quite surprised he didn't tell the O.P the vehicle is unroadworthy and is currently not complying to ADR's.
