One of my favourite pictures, this is Earth and the Moon as viewed from the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. This was taken when Mars was 142 million km from Earth in it's orbit. If you look carefully, you can see South America under those clouds.

A view from the Moil water tower in 1975, after Cyclone Tracy. Its a huge concrete tower, which had a fridge embedded in the side of it. The arrow points out my house.. the large buildings below the arrow are Casuarina High School, where I was studying year 10. This photo would have been taken at least a couple of days into the new year, the roads are clear of debris.

My apologies for the quality of the images. These are just scanned prints from a cheap 1960s camera, some of the images I havent got to restoring yet.

The front of my house in early January 1975. Thats a power pole blocking the drive, still firmly concreted into the ground.

The rear, a couple of shots over the space of a month.

Looking down the street, thats the next door neighbours driveway. Ours still has the power pole blocking it.

The houses behind us. Darwin basically had two kinds of houses. Double brick ground level, or fibro houses on concrete stilts. They built them high to try and catch some breeze.

Almost all of the fibro houses were completely destroyed, and even the pillars leaned, as you can see in this photo.

There were some houses in Tiwi that were floorboards only, and every pillar was at 45 degrees, quite surreal.

That's pretty insane. Looks like a ghost town.

I was there, words cant describe it. I still cannot believe the small loss of life. I think Darwin had a population of about 50k at the time, and its not much more than 50 people died, that's just incredible. It took us 6 hrs the next morning to go the 15km or so into the city in our short wheelbase cruiser, detouring via peoples yards when you couldn't use the road.

Every piece of all those destroyed houses become a cluster of more missiles...

Slain Navy SEAL Jon Tumilson's dog "Hawkeye" lies next to his casket during funeral services in Rockford, Iowa. Tumilson was one of 30 American soldiers killed in Afghanistan on August 6 when their helicopter was shot down during a mission to help fellow troops who had come under fire.

of every picture and story on this thread, seeing the dog like that made me tear up... so sad.
