Hey Guys,
Just wondering what the instructions are for replacing the steering rack rubbers?
My passenger side rubber has split, and mechanic recommended I replace it...
[Image of it attached to thread]
Cheers boys

Remove the tie rod end, take note of how many turns to remove it so you can put it back on in exactly the same position. Undo the clip on the narrow end of the boot and cut the cable tie on the big end, slip the boot off and put the new one on. Simple really.

Unscrew it. There should be a a squared section on the tie rod to get a spanner on to hold it while you undo the tie rod end with another spanner.
I almost forgot, undo the nut on the tie rod end , leave the nut on but screw up to the top of the tread so can give it a bash with a hammer without damaging the tread. It should pop out easily.

Also when you take the rubber boot off have a look at the rack and give it a clean as some crap will have entered the through the split .

I always use some form of marking like white out that might stay in the threads and on the nuts to aid putting the tie rod back in the same position

When i done mine i measured the distance between the lock nut and the end of the thread on the rack with my vernier calipers. Bunnings sell digital calipers for about $20 .

If removing tie rod end, I used tie rod removal tool . Very easy

Since removing boot, consider changing tie rod end anyway

And yes digital calipers, measuring distance of tie rod bolt centre to nut

I find using the tierod removal tool can cause the tie rod rubber boot to split.....Of course if you're replacing the tie rod it isn't an issue, but if you're not, splitting the boot can cause premature failure of the tie rod as road grime can enter into the base of the tie rod
