Buy and store sealed bottles of oil for up to 5 to 7 years depending on type. Check out the use by date on the container before purchase.

And there was a discussion recently about this exact topic, with your shelf live being correct...

My shelves are already full of oil and the boss is questioning quantities. I generally buy in 20 litre containers.

... reminds me of a question i was asked at the weekend, a mate of a mate type question

You know a bit about cars, my cars diff needs topping up, maybe I should drain/refill the diff instead ....what oil should I use?

I said how old is the oil you want to top up? .. he said 45 years old ! o_O
( I found out its a HZ Holden)

My brother had an XC that had done 500k by the time he sold it. AFAIK the diff oil had never been changed in it. He is not one to spend money on cars so I'm pretty confident my assumptions are correct.

Funny thing is even with 100k oil changes a modern diff would be lucky to last 200k before the glitter appears.
