Towing Capacity

    Ive got a VX Berlina Series 2 i know it says it can tow 2.1 tonne

    Im looking at buying a boat but the load will be around 1750

    Will this have any problems with my car in the future as in excessive wear

    Looking at upgrading to heavy duty springs and maybe shocks

    Any help on towing something with this weight would be good

    If you're within the weight of the towbar (should be a sticker on the inside of the B Pillar) then you'll be fine. Trans cooler could help depending how it goes. Just remember the boat could be alot heavier when you pull it out of the water.

    Oh yeah its a Auto but with my current boat i have i drive it like a manual

    Got told that when towing heavy load if you drive it like a manual than its easier on the trans ?

    Either way a trans cooler is highly recommended! I have cooked a trans towing a ski boat!

    Yeh i use to tow a 10x6 box trailer with my VS, it had a Auto tranny cooler on it and still use to overheat, the trailer was only 750kg.
    I towed a horse float the other week, it had one horse in it and my VS Acclaim was getting thrown around like a rag doll.
    I got a 2100kg Haymen Reece bar fitted to it as well. Bugger that mate i would be crapping my pants towing a boat that heavy, what if you get on a steep ramp and the car cant hold the wait?? The boat will end up heavyer then that once you load her up with gear to.

    So why do they say they can tow2.1 tonne

    The weight of the boat is fuel everything in it

    I burnt out the gearbox of my Jag once trying to haul a trailer up a fairly steep mountain in Sth Africa. It was my first automatic and, not knowing any better, I simply left it in drive and allowed it to change up and down on it's own accord. When the vehicle was being repaired in Durban, I was advised that, if in future I decided to do something similar again, then it would be better to change the gears manually. If I remember correctly, the reason they gave was that, if the vehicle was driven as a manual, the hydraulic bands in the gearbox were locked together and couldn't slip against each other, which apparently is the case if the gearbox is allowed to change up and down of it's own accord.

    You should always change the gears manually if you are towing more than 800kg. You should also never tow more than 800kg in overdrive as it strains the gearbox. Leave the car in 3rd. You will do more revs but use the same amount of fuel as your engine won't be struggling.

    I've towed a furniture trailer that was 1,050kg unladen full to the roof with furniture doing 110kph down the highway for 2 hours and my car loved it. Being a big square trailer with a lot of weight up high I did get a bit of wobbling happening when the wind picked up but you shouldn't have this with a boat. My only concern would be your car pulling that boat full of water up that boat ramp.

    Hey. I don't understand why people are saying a boat will be heavier on the way out.
    1 you have been driving it and will be less fuel. = lighter
    2 you will have eaten and drink everything in your esky. Tip the ice out. = lighter
    3 if your boat is filling up with water I would suggest you get it looked at.

    As said. Just use the car as a manual and don't drive too fast. Always remember to check ramp before putting it in. Even if it is concrete.

    Also change your diff and gearbox oil more frequently.

    Just general maintenance too make sure your cooling system is on good nick etc etc

    Thats what i thought if boat was full of water i wouldnt be coming back in LOL

    Unless what people are talking about is the pressure of the water and pulling the boat out of the water

    Never drive silly when towing now as got bit weight to pull up

    Your tow rating is based on whether you can stop it not whether you can pull it.

    Tow bars are designed with huge safety factors, due to uncertainty about what they will experience. (eg people who snatch 4wds by the tow bar). With gentle acceleration in a straight line your tow bar will be fine with at least double what it's rated to.

    Most boats take water to some degree when they are out, either seeping in thru leaks or just plain waves over the side. 1 litre of water = 1kg and it's pretty easy to have a few hundred litres sloshing around in the bilge.

    As for towing - the most important thing is load it right. Around 25kgs of towball weight is ideal, no more than 50. New springs/shocks/suspension rubbers is probably a good idea - they are often shot by now anyway. A transmission cooler and new fluid probably wouldn't go astray if you are towing for any great distance. Be sympathetic to your auto and it should be fine if it's in otherwise good shape. Also, keep in mind that you can't stop, turn or accelerate anywhere near as well as when you aren't towing so keep large gaps from the car in front, be vigilant and try to drive as smoothly as possible.

    I hear what ya mean by the water being in the boat
    But mine never would take on a couple litres and thats a 88 model boat so i hope the new one wouldnt take on more LOL
