does any one know about VL VIN plates

Can anyone help with my VIN?

I have a VL V8 berlina with a build plate date of MAY 88.
I am curiuos to find out how far from the end of the production run this car would have been built.

I am a little confused as the second digit implies I have an SL but the writing from the original owners manual has berlina on it and it has berlina badges on the interior and exterior, plus some other berlina options.

No-one can really help you unless you post up the numbers off the VIN plate & build plate from your VL.

The model code on the build plate should read:
VL8VK19 for an SL/exec, or VL8VL19 for a Berlina

The K means base & the L means mid model. X = Calais

VLs finished up in June/July '88 (depending on plant)

ok i have a 1991 VN "S" sedan the vin number reads as 6H8VNK19HML, the vn vin number for a v6 sedan is 6H8VNK19HJL....... y is mine different???? one posted on here has the last 3 letters HJL mine is HML whats goin on ??????

It's because those "examples" don't explain what the breakdown of the code is.

The J is the model year code, and the one in the example is for 1988 model year.
1989 = K
1990 = L
1991 = M

Note the model year runs from sept 01 to Aug 31. So a 1991 model is anything built from 01-09-90 to 31-08-91.

This follows the yankee GM tradition.

Can anyone help me out here? My VN's VIN number is close to, but not included in those above.

It's : 6H8VNK19UML with the numbers 503042 after it.

It SHOULD be a 1991 VN SS Commodore, but I want to make certain.

not

6H8VPX19UML as quoted by gsmrobinson.

I found a pretty good site in my frustrated net searchings last night.

Basically, sign up with a username and valid e-mail (just use a spam account, I did) and it will send you a password. Login and it will give you 50 free goes at decoding VIN numbers. After that 50, either pay, or sign up with another e-mail address. Gmail anyone?
