Hey all,

Attempted setting the base timing yesterday, put the car in diagnostic mode, then hooked up the timing light.

The issue i have is the timing mark was bouncing around a good 2 degrees each way from 10 degree mark that i was trying to line up.

What could be causing this and would it have anything to do with my slightly rough idling issue?

Thanks in advance

Ive changed plugs, leads, rotor button, cap and coil.

The issue is the timing mark jumping while trying to set the base timing.

I would expect that if your idle is unstable then the timing mark will move around, which is what you are experiencing. Are you conducting the timing with the engine at normal operating temperature with all accessories turned off?

An update to my issue.

On top of the time my issue, since the weather in Melbourne has cooled off I'm finding it hard to start in the mornings. It cranks and takes longer to fire, and once running it idles very low and stutters and light throttle application while cold.

I'm having a tune written for the car as the cam was changed without an appropriate tun being don.

Any ideas on the cold start issue?

Sorry to say this but you are nothing but an idiot and a time-waster!!! How in the hell do you expect to get good advice on this forum when you neglect to provide vital information like the fact that you have changed the camshaft. If you had provided that information, anyone on this forum would have told you that yes, you need to have to have the ECU tuned to suit the camshaft, otherwise you will have exactly the symptoms you are experiencing, rough idle, difficulty starting when cold, and sub-standard performance.

Its an sv5000 cam got a bum steer from a supposed expert and was told it will run fine with stock memcal. As for calling me an idiot im no expert hence asking for advice.

And the expert was someone who i had been told was very good with efi holdens.

Thanks again for being so kind, really nice of you.

Can we keep the personal comments in check please :)

A SV5000 cam will run on a standard tune but certainly far from ideal. There are SV5000 tunes floating about in cyber space so that would be a good starting point for a tune but I have no doubt it could be improved upon.
