Hey all, been running the SV3800 (ASBY) tune religiously in my VN since I bought it and in the VP beforehand but lately it struck me that something just wasnt right. It would lose power when hot, run pretty hot and was quite noisy above 2k rpm. So I decided to stick the stock tune (AWUY) back in and my god, its a completely different car to drive! Power delivery is MUCH smoother, runs considerably cooler (2nd line max, unlike 3rd or 4th previously), less engine vibration and its much quieter. I can now cruise along at 2k rpm without it sounding like its at 4k rpm, and can rev it out past 4k rpm without sounding like its going to explode. Its also quieter under acceleration but hasnt lost any power from what I can tell.
Now the point of this thread is Im curious as to why the SV3800 tune ran like crap .ie was the SV3800 motor much different to the standard buick? Is the tune known to be bad? Or could it just be that the AWUY tune is newer and more refined? Either way I wont be using ASBY again.
I hope all the above made sense, havnt slept yet lol.
SV3800 had the exact same motor, only difference was the tune and the extractors/exhaust. When my old man had an SV3800 years ago we never noticed any of the problems you mentioned, apart from it having a hell of a lot more go than my standard VN.
Thirsty was my thoughts on the SV3800 tune. The first tunes in the early VN's were very good.
There are better tunes to be had for sure than the SV3800.
White 05 V6 VZ Executive - Thrashed Ex Telstra car
and 3 Dangerous non ABS VN's
I went from the standard tune on my VP V6 Series 2 to the SV3800 and i love the extra go it has. Havent noticed any of the things you mentioned.
All the guys who have had a look at the two tunes say the only difference is the timing. So I dont see how it could be causing those issues.
Not much more power but more "zippy" with the extra timing. Would definitely be faster.
2 totally different tunes for different series engine with mods i allways run the correct tune for each series makes a big difference i ran the asby in my vp was shit so was the arbp its designed for a different cam for VP best tune is a modded BAAM0265 much nicer than either hsv tune
I tune the oldschool way fear on the passengers face and knuckle colour cant go wrong
tabbacco is still my favorite vegetable
I used to use ARPB the early SV3800 tune in my VN at first at it was better on fuel and a little faster .1 to 100 than ATFY. If you consider the most gain I ever got from the car was about .25 after years of trying and 100's of tunes. .1 is quite good. But my VN as one of the non tune responsive ones, I think the timing must have allready been advanced on the cas more than most of them are.
I didn't use ASBY but I bet if your car was 100% working it would run perfectly, all the VP tunes ran fine in my VN, just slightly slower. The thing is more than half of VN/P V6's are rooted lol. You might not think so, you might not have noticed but over the years things go wrong with them and so long as they still idle good no one cares so they over time become only able to run good on one tune(the one that's in them) It's for this reason that I like to and delco does too :0 use the same base tune that the car came with just to be sure, incase the car is shonky. Then if you leave the idle settings and everything under 1200 rpm stock you don't have any issues. You don't allways have to do this, but it saves on redoing them on the cars that are fussy. It makes no difference on 99% of the 5 litres since they seem much more stable in old age unless they have very serious issues.
Also it's allways possible your copy of asby has a few crooked bytes in it (can happen)
ive noticed my sv3800 to go alot harder then the vn executives ive driven and my car has a full bodykit, and would weigh alot more, might be due to the fact of the hsv headers and exhaust but i think the tune is pretty damn good considering...
Hmm corrupt tune is a possibility, but no engine light? Apart from when engine braking down hills I would get error code "O2 lean", which brings me to my next point. Its using noticeably more fuel now which means it was running lean, and that would explain the high engine temp and lack of power when hot. Foam man I will send you the ASBY binary I have and you can have a sneak peek through it for any obvious abnormalities.
But I think I will stick to the stock tune for now, or stock fuel map at least. Uses enough fuel now lol
So ASBY is a series 1 tune? That would explain things
