    Default timing on vb commodore

    hey guys,

was fiddling about with the timing on the vb today, was at 4deg BTDC advanced it to 16deg, now runs waaay better, smoother, faster altough some pinging is noticeable under heavy acceleration

any thoughts on what damage this can do in the long run

I used to run my 3.3 at about 6 to 8 deg and ran like a dream but also make sure the vacume advance is working on the dizzy as I have come a cross a few in the past including my own that wasn't working properly if at all as that can make a huge difference.
I do what I do, Not because I have to, Not because I want to, But because I can

    ..

That pinging you notice is whats called detonation under load.. what that means is overloading/leaning out the combustion chamber damage from this can be burnt piston,s hole in piston crown or even burnt valves.. to over come that run lower heat rating spark plugs and increase fuel/air mixure.( feed the bitch more fuel ).most average is around 13-14:1 ratio for daily driver..Race cars run around 10:1 ratio Factory timing for holden 6's is 6dg static... tho the injected VK royal 6;s ran 12 degree static.. basicly for your stock everyday driver around 6 to 10degrees is safe.. personly i would retard the timing to no more than 12 degree's to reduce burning a hole in a piston infact run it at 10 degrees.... You'll also notice the more sustainable power through out the RPM range with out loss...
If more power/exelleration is required then you need to look at further engine mods beyond timing..

ok, thanks for that, due to reasons for keeping it original i will not be doing too much to it. one thing I have considered, when I get the $$$, is a ported tella terra head, and paint it holden orange so it still looks original...

... Nothing wrong with that.. or even get some slight port work done to your existing head, flat top pistons and a camshaft upgrade etc
