Default Help putting ecotec back together

Hi I'm learning as I go at the moment but I just installed the pistons and connected them to the crank and I want to install my new cam shaft and my doublerow timing chain how do I know when cyl 1 is TDC when the piston is all the way at the top? and on my crank shaft sprocket theres like 6 ways it can go on if that makes any sense just wonder what number should be inline with the camshaft timing mark sorry if that makes not much sense at all but I am a newbie at all this and I'm trying to learn
    Cheers

First off did you check your clearances?

Do you cam wheel or a dial gauge? (think its adial gauge my brain isnt working on that one)

Have you put the heads on yet?
