Hey guys just rebuilt a ecotec and put it in yesterday and started first go I'm using Royal purple break in oil 10/30w and for a little bit at the start it was ticking real bad but has stopped and sounds fine but theres a whole heap of wight smoke coming from around the headers when it warms up and was wondering why that is the mobile mechanic that came out said that some new rebuilt engines can do that for a few days but I'm kinda worried about it and it hasn't been run in on a dyno either and was wondering if it could be the rings or something like that and how should I run it in properly before I start driving it around?
Thanks Guys
Did you soak the hydraulic lifters before fitting? If not then those would have possibly been the ticking noise you heard.
My old workmates engines always used to smoke a bit when he first started them and he said it was normal, he also used plenty of assembly lube/oil when putting em together.
When you say smoke of the headers, do you mean of the outside of the headers or a exhaust leak? If you have touched the headers with greasy/oily hands then yes this will burn off when the engine is first started.
As for the actual running in, because the ecotec's use a roller cam, cam run in isn't as critical, just need to bed the rings in really. Take it for a spin working the engine up and down the rev range under various loads, starting of with medium loads/revs and then go from there. My mate used to build race engines for mini's and his run in was the first 2 laps of the first warm up session, then go hard. Admittedly he did use some sort of special hone but what ever he did worked as he always finished well and build a few of his competitors engines as well.

cool thanks guys I'm a bit worried now after reading that break in page I'v started it a few times with out driving any where so theres been no load on the engine and hope I havnt stuffed the ring sealing yet
Na I don't think its from touching the headers might be the gaskets from the rocker covers leaking
