I just bought a vy S.

I want to turbocharge it. What sort of price am i looking at?

Im looking to spend no more then $6,000 on parts and labour for a full single turbo setup.

I dont need huge power gains.

How much do you think it would cost to do this and is it even possible?

Is it an ecotec NA or a supercharged 6.

If it's an ecotec in all honesty, 6k would get you a unreliable setup.

You'd be better off buying a supercharged 6 and doing the conversion. Or buying a L67 bottom end or something and getting the motor rebuilt to handle boost.

Turbos have been put on ecotecs and run well for a little while. But if you want something you can put all of your faith ina nd trust on holidays etc. Make sure your bottom end is up to scratch and capable of running boost.

If you already have a super 6 then yes you can put a turbo on it and it be reasonably reliable. However it would really be pushing 6k, you'd have to get a second hand turbo with an internal wastegate. find a set of turbo manifolds second hand (fat chance) or get some made (about 1k minimum..). The egine is already at 8.5:1 and the pistons are more than up to running some boost. The rods are also stronger than the ecotec so these will aid in safe running.

There are a heap of little things like oil lines and water lines. exhaust, dump pipe, cooler and piping, tuning, fuel system, and if you can't do it yourself then you'll have to get someone else to do it. The list goes on. Basicly budget the best you can htne double it. This will give a realistic price of what needs to be done.

Hope that helps somewhat.

It is an ecotec

I wouldnt be boosting it too high. It will be an everyday driver so id rather have smaller boost and less wear and tear

so how much are you saying it will roughly be for a small turbo setup?

Would you recomend dropping a gen3 in? how much would you be able to get a late model gen3 with low ks for?
Is it a straight swap and whta sort of things would you have the change and what problems come with the swap?

If you are thinking of doing an engine swap. Probably consider changing cars.

Going G3 is a good idea and could possibly be done for 6k??? Maybe...

But if this is a path you want to take thenI'd just sell the car and buy a car with a G3 in it.

Otherwise I'd rebuild the bottom end and get a smallish second hand turbo.

But either way you are fighting a hard battle starting off with an ecotec.

Well I'd probably rebuild your motor with a stronger bottom end, and concentrate on that. Then once you can save some more go for the power adder.

It's really hard to turbo your car when you have to do everything and try and keep it under 6k.

Best of luck to you,

it seems its going to be too expensive to add any real power to my existing motor.

Diy Turbo Setup

DIY your own twin turbo setup that ways its easier to fab up some steam pipe manifolds. a bit of custom intake piping to front mount cooler, its not very hard to plum oil lines from the block through the turbo and then to the sump. get an ecu chip and tune, and dont run more than about 7 psi should be good for a while..... dodgy but it will work.

G'day Guys,

My brother has bought a vy s with the supercharged engine and after driving
an RX3 13b turbo fo some years now, he is fairly hiped up about getting his
VY turbocharged.
He has been making a lot of enquiries regarding a turbo setup for his new toy
and this is basicly what he has come up with.

1 new roller bearing turbo $1900
2 stainless steel manifolds $ 3000
depending on build quality
3 wastgate $ 850
4 blow off valve $ 400
5 intercooler and piping $ 1350
6 drain fitted to sump including hot tank sump $ 220
7 braided s\s oil line & silicone return hose $ 130
7 k&n pod filter 4" $ 140
8 s\s dump pipe $ 230
9 turbo silicone hose for turbo+intercooler+t,body $ 100
10 bosch green injectors $ 450
11 high flow fuel pump $ 230
12 rising rate regulator $ 160
13 larger maf + adapters $ 360
14 exhaust system 3inch $ 680
15 mobile1 oil, oil filter, platnum spark plusg $ 220
16 custom chip on dyno $ 1600
and a few other bits and peices $ 300
This is about $12300.00 for parts and services rendered and by the time
he pay for all the labor, I could see the total bill exceeding 15G's.
So now that I have this info, when someone says there getting a turbo for
3,4,5,6 grand, all i can say is, it's nice to dream fellas.

Me mate Cent6 Sc'd his ECOTEC and is making plenty reasonable power like around 200kw on the wheels. The ECOTEC is a lot better engine than being what you are being led to believe. Turbo's are hard on stock engines as the cylinder pressure can get too high too low in the RPM range where as a cent blower looks after your motor just fine.

All for less money than you what you are paying.
