Default vt v6 perfprmance mods- is this possible

hi new to the v6 scene, i am now thinking of building a modified v6
a few questions to those that may know or may even help with some that want too-some of these may sound silly so forgive me

Q-1 - is it possible to get a v6 crank knife edged and rebalanced? would the gains be worth the $$$

Q-2 is it possible to run a sneaky pete nos kit on a standard motor and would it effect any of the airflow setup they have?or if i ran other nos kit what would be the max hp jets to use safely

Q-3 is there a manifold available that allows one to run a carby such as qaud webbers or holley or mechanical injection other than the throttle body setup?

Q-4 whats the difference between a commodore v6 and a buick v6 ?

Q-5 are the v6 cranks steel , forged or cast?

Q-6 is there a reason we cant modify are stock manifold to run say 4 for example throttle bodies - other than the twin setup

Q-7 has anyone tried to port the heads on a v6 or even shave them and the block for a higher compression?

Q-8 are any buick v6 or chev v6 parts interchangeable with the commodore v6?

i know some of these questions may seem silly but remember when the holden straight 6 first came out , look at the times that some of those old red motors do now with people inventing and trying odd things, and think how some of those red motor 6 mods seemed ridiculous bak then,

cant see any problem knife edging and balancing the crank, unsure of any gains made

no manifold is available for a carby. one could be made though.

depends which buick v6 you're talking about.

there was the commonly used and modified gnt buick v6, which is dizzy ran, older than the vn motor. only interchangeable parts is really the pistons and rods.

then theres the S1 buick v6's, which are the same as vn-vr v6s(with a few small differences), commonly known as an LN3 and L27, then theres the S2 buick v6, which is the same as the ecotec, again with a few small differences, mainly the intake manifold. this is known as the L36, with the supercharged motor being almost the same as the aussie one, both known as the L67

no reason you cant modify the manifold to use 4 throttle bodies, just a bit of work, and unless they all goto the same piping, will need to use a mafless tune.

im sure people have tried porting and headshaving the v6.

the us buick/pontiac v6 intake manifolds are interchangeable, but being that theyre east/west config, the throttlebody will hit the firewall in a commodore, so needs to be flipped 180deg and belt system redesigned to clear. unless you want to get necks welded, dont bother buying us superchargers. buy an aussie one. again, the GNT turbo rods and pistons will fit the vn-vr blocks, not the ecotec, as the block is physically shorter.

there will be other bits and pieces interchangeable, but probably ask around before throwing the dollars at it.

Well i guess everything depends on how big your budget is, and what your trying to do.

If you want power, forget the V6. Drop a LS3 and 6spd in, bolt on charger and your looking at 450+RWKW.

If your doing it becuase you love V6s, well its worth dropping a L67 in (The supercharged V6 version, very good base engine which is capable of big power).

Only upgrade the Ecotec V6 (which is what you have) if its for sentimental value. They arnt a very good engine and would take serious $ to get any power, and even then they wont be super fast.

Best bet, either sell your car and buy a later model Super6 or V8, or drop a L67/LS1 in your current ride.

As for ecotec mods... well you can get a stocker kit (to 4.2L), complete new internals, supercharger/turbo and upgraded gearbox.... Dont expect change from $10-15k and max power of 250 - 300 rwkw (which is the same sort of power as a stock LS1 with OTR intake and tune) which would cost $4-6k

No, i believe they are based on the same block but the L67 has a lot of internal upgrades. Actually the L67 has several features which are normally only found in racing engines... Ill see if i can find the link.

L67 Engine Teardown - Thrasher Engineered Performance 3800 & 3800SC Pontiac Grand Prix GTP & Buick Regal GS

"and clearly visible are the needle bearings - very trick high performance stuff! Also visible are the lifters still in their bores.
....
You can readily see the roller on the bottom where it contacts the cam lobe, and the oil hole in the side. Again, very high tech stuff previously only seen on serious high dollar racing engines.

The main caps on this block are cross bolted! This makes an extremely strong and rigid block - cross bolting is typically only seen on extreme competition engines"

So yeah, if your going to work a V6 engine, this is the one to do.

lifters are the same as the ecotec from memory, which are the same right back to vn, and also are the same as most chevy v8s.

pretty sure the rockers are the same aswell, but not 100% on that one.

yep, from VN V6 onwards had roller cams. also fairly certain the standard ecotec and L67 use the same blocks

L67 & Ecotec share the same block and crank. The only difference in the bottom end is the rods & pistons. Both L67 & Ecotec have cross bolted main caps (4 bolts, 2 conventional and 2 from the sides) as stated all V6's from VN up have roller cams. All of the L67 top end is completely different from the Ecotec! As said if you are going to build a strong V6, the L67 is definately a good base to start with, however if you are building a N/A engine the pistons will have to be changed to get some decent compression in it.....Sort of defeting the purpose of starting with the L67 (you will still have a good set of rods though) If building a F/I engine, then no 2 ways about it get hold of an L67....

Yeah agreed. I would be pretty stupid to try and build a NA V6.... your just not going to get the power.

Only problem with a L67, is its a bit harder to get one working with a manual transmission. Again depends on the budget, you can either go a T5 (from the buick days) or a T56. Try and stay away from the getrag boxes.
