Default The good old COME stroker kit

i was doing a bit of lurking on the comeracing.com site and i stumbled upon this:

C.O.M.E. Racing Latest News

Quote:
Add...$1000.00 to any of the above prices for the inclusion of our billet steel crank to replace the cast crank.
my question is, what sort of benefit would the billet crank have over the cast one? would it make it rev harder at all? i'm looking at making my ute rev like a chainsaw and i'm just looking at materials.

I hope to purchase a kit for the engine with longer pistons, a shorter crank, stronger valve springs, and a solid cam. A friend in the know with engines tells me that this setup will allow me to rev sky high without making the engine explode.

What do you guys think?

billet steel cranks are machined from a solid piece of billet steel and are alot stronger than most cast cranks

$1000 extra isnt a bad price either as it isnt the cheapest of metals to buy

Yes what peanuts says is true, billet crank are about the best you can buy. Shorter stroke engines usaully are better for revs. There are other things to consider as well the angle degree of the V os veru important and old buick v angle isnt too friendly to revs.

well on a stock block no.

but having the block braced for reinforcement is one of the steps to stop the pistons from escaping

and an extremely efficient cooling system probably the next thing needed to prevent breakdowns.... or blowups

could you explain a bit in regards to the angle of the v? This is a vy ecotec, if that matters. I figured that if i shortened the stroke of the crankshaft and kept the overall length of the engine the same (if not more) by using longer pistons i should be able to rev a considerable portion more, and make the ponies.

well basically the angle of the bores puts strain on the rotating assembly, and the way the V6 is setup isnt ideal for big revs for a long time

basically too many revs and the strain the pistons put on the bores makes them want to blow holes in the cylinder walls and make the pistons say hello to the fresh air and daylight

i think ive read somewhere that a smaller degree angle block is better for revs as there isnt as much sideways force

probably why inline 4 cylinders can rev to 9,000 revs or more as they are vertical bores

so basically work out what power you want from the motor and what revs the power will be made at and work off of that

if the revs will be too high then look into another way of generating the power like supercharging or turbo setup

Thanks, you cleared that up quite well. After reading that i'm leaning more to stroking out the engine to 4.2 and building it up in preparation for a bit of forced induction down the road. I guess i'll get to that after i throw the t56 and the 3.9 gears in - which will be in a few months. I'm going to strengthen everything else first, THEN play with the engine. At least now i know to go billet!

Good luck with it all, it is going to be very costly. Trust me ive got a COME 4.2 stroker with a Raptor supercharger

Yeah balancing engines isnt as easy as most people think.Things like v8's which alot run 90 degree is perfect inbuilt designed balanced. for example 720 degrees in a full combustion cycle divided by 8 cylinders give you 90 degrees. The problem with the buick v6's which all commodores up to and including VY is that theyre based on a v8 with the same v angle. The problem now is 6 cyclinder and 90 degrees doesnt divide evenly into 720. Thats the basic reason why the v6 has in inbuilt balancing issues. Theres a lot more to add to this but i wont go into. It would be a lot better for rev if they were either 60, 120 or 180 degree v's but 180 would then make it a boxer engine.

thanks. Was any increase really noticeable after the stroker kit alone?

Ive got the forced induction engine. I wanted to supercharge mine to run a bit of boost and keeping it quite reliable so rebuilding as a stroker was the go. You see all these turbos on commodores with stock internals they pull some big numbers untill something breaks

Heres a before and after dyno graph on the stroker

hey maniac you should add after blower one too, and correct me if im wrong but the blower/turbo stroker is 8.2:1 compression.

This one is with a raptor, theres still a few things that I need to do with it first like dual 2.5 exhaust and fit an intercooler so I can run a smaller pulley. Yes it has 8.2:1 very boost friendly
