vx v6 cam?
hey guys,
ive got a vx v6,
not lookin to buy a v8 cause of the costs involved and succh,,
wondering if i upgrade the cam,
which package would be the best, brands etc,,
how much $$
and how much kilowattage it would add,
so far ive got a 2.5inch exh, with extractors, and cold air intake is next,
with the bf xr8 bonnet bulge,
which looks madd on the vx btw.
and a vx ss body minus the spoiler.
and maybe some semi naked chick art on the side.
thats the image in my mind so far.hahah
cheers

What the hell does the body kit and paint have to do with a cam and going faster?
Dont bother putting a cam in a V6, a few ppl on this forum have done it and its really nothing great at all on a stocker v6.

Not looking to buy a v8 because of the "costs involved" but you want to throw money at a ecotec to get power out of it??
Am i the only one here confused by this logic?
FYI: You can probably get a cam kit for about 700 odd... but them you have to have someone put it in... and then you need a tune... so your lookin at a good 1500+ in the end i would say.

my cammed v6 cost me more to run then my 5.7 liter vt. so the fuel thing is out of the window. its really expansive mate cost me 3 grand plus tune, plus diff and it wasnt all that fast nad was getting around 14-15 liters per hundred. if i had my time again i would have just bought the v8 straight away and id already have an easy 12 secoond daily. hope that helps
Also thought id give u a run down of wat i bought and how much it cost.
crow cam kit minus memcal: $1200
port and polished/recoed heads $750
labour etc $800
tune $1200
diff $600
after all this my car did 0-60 in 6.7 seconds which is probably still a very very high 14's or low 15's

^^^ Just for a comparison...
I had 1.95 YT RR - 600
HM Headers with 2.5 catback and standard cat - 1000
3.73 LSD - 1000
CAI and K&N filter - 500
So all up $3100 in terms of go fast mods and i was getting 6.8sec 0 - 100kmph and around the low to mid 14's quater.
So two different paths with an ecotec.... about the same amoutn of money pilled into them and basically the same un-inspiring results overall in the grand scheme of building a quick car.

ok well to buy a ls1 is probably about 3 grand.firstly.
then to do anything to that, itl cost some more.
and petrol for a v8 is mental.
and if i wanted a decent car, clubby,ss,or anything like that, thats upwards of 20.
just tryin to do the best with what i got.
we dont all have the money to just 'buy a v8'
but i could probly managae to throw bits n pieces at an ecotec.
thats all.

Yeah but as its been said...
The etra money you put into the ecotec you could have gotten a ls1, the ecotec will drink alot more and won't have the performance or the sound of a ls1.
I've been down that road myself...and the car ented up not being practical for me at all... costly to run and I wanted more out of the ecotec than it could deliver...
Save the coin and get a ls1...
Thats what IM doing... i sold my VX v6, got a lil run about... saving the coin for a house and a vx ls1 ute... Daily driver a 1.8 and then weekends i can enjoy something with abit more balls...

benjamino: this is a rough run down of what i have done to my VS ecotec.
-Yella Terra 1.8 rockers and pushrods $550 (got them back before they were even popular!!) I put these in several years ago
-Crow stage 3 valve springs, chromoly retainers and collets- $200
-Rollmaster timing gear and chain kit- $99
-Custom grind camshaft (equivalent to a 272) $600. This cam is larger than a stage III crow.
To fit all this stuff is def not for the faint hearted, but i saved thousands by just installing it ALL myself. Therefore i spent under $1000 to buy and install a cam and upgraded valve train components. My tunes only cost me $400, coz its done by a mate.
Plus, of course all the usual bolt ons. Made 158 kw at the wheels BEFORE the cam.
If you do plenty of research and shopping around you can get wicked prices!
I dont give a t0ss what anyone says about "just buy a v8", "v6's are not worth the money".. I am prepared to spend time and money on my v6! End of story! Modding a v6 doesnt have to be expensive, it only gets pricey when you buy grossly overpriced components that you could have got better or cheaper somewhere else!!
I stay stick with it! good luck

i couldnt agree more love my v6, im just not that handy with a spanner as u, otherwise i would do the cam and internals, just cost to much to pay someone else to do it.
