i want to know whether its worth turbo'ing the buick.. or getting an rb30/rb25 etc..

personal preference really - but you could go an rb25 from a skyline, with a VL sump and engine mounts (and I think the manual gearbox is same as the vl turbo? or same size tailshaft anyway or something?), and you'll be able to bolt the whole thing in (except the wiring and exhaust) You can make a new tailshaft out of half a vl one and half a vr one.
this way you can be sure that the box will put up with the power and you won't have any issues as it's all been engineered and built properly by the japs

. As an added bonus, this is a perfectly bolt in conversion and depending ont he power output you probably won't even need an engineers certificate to make it legal!
And as a super extra bonus, if you keep the rb25/26 completely standard with all factory stuff, it will also be epa friendly! - so if you get pulled up you shouldn't have any major issues!
The cost of going this route would be whatever the frontcut/motor costs you, + custom exhaust (500?) + wiring (1000 if you can't do it yourself I guess?)
I'd say it's possible to get a rb25 conversion in there for < $4-5k if you can do basically all the work yourself. That will get you a reliable (pending the wiring

) turbo commodore with a bit of punch, that's legal to drive on the street. - from that base you can always upgrade turbo etc etc..

wat will have to b changed if i do the buick...
|
to get it RUNNING:
- Exhaust manifolds
- exhaust/dump pipe
- ecu/tune
- sump drilled for oil return
- t piece off oil pressure switch for oil feed
- water feed/return lines
- bit of manouvering/massaging stuff to get cooler & dump pipes in (bumpers, a/c etc)
- thermo fan (depending on where you mout the turbo)
(heaps of other stuff if you wanna get it going quicker - trans, converter, diff etc etc)
not if the turbo conversion goes well
how long is a piece of string? depends how 'properly' you want to do it. You might get a
very basic setup with a china turbo, china gate, bov, boost gauge etc for $3-4k parts if you can do just about all the work yourself.
A proper setup with a brand name bits and built driveline etc... the sky's the limit for cost
