Removing Air flow metre on VY
G'day i spoke to the mechanic next door to my work coz he had just recieved a 5.7 with it's air flow metre removed and the engine re tuned.
i was wondering if this can be done to a 3.8 ecotec v6 and if at all worth it and how i would go about it, im not very technical minded and don't know alot about cars i just want a little extra power for me 6 but can't afford to change over to an for for fuel and financial reasons.
any help would be good and if you know prices and places in vic near frankston
Cheers.

You wont see any huge power differences on V6 by going mafless tune. Gen3 do because they are quite rescricted from factory. They no longer comply with adr's when you go mafless though.
IMO if you got a stock v6 its a very pointless thing to do

cool cool, i thought that might have been the case, this 5.7 without the metre sounds better and the pick up is insane.
thanks for your help

i thought LS1s have MAF and MAP sensors, so they can go to a MAP tune and get rid of the MAF. your ecotec has no MAP, only MAF

Hit the nail on the head stocky
All ecotec tunes have a *fail safe* tune which runs in the event of a maf failure. Im pretty sure its a very conservative tune. It is possible to remove these fail safe maps and replace them with a performance tune and the MAF can be removed. BUT if you do this there is no way that the computer can make adjustments to the fuel maps. I dont know how safe it is either.

only decent way to do it is to change to a VR wiring loom and run a map sensor with a new tune

^ its not cheap to do though, unless you know what your doing with the loom. Oh, and you will also loose sequential injection. So a little economy drop. But if your going mafless and to the effort of changing the loom for more power, then your probably not looking for economy

you can go mafless on the ecotec without going with a VR pcm and without loosing sequential injection. its a matter of wiring up a map sensor into the current pcm and re-tuning - changing pcm's is the old school way of going mafless.
also to all of my knowledge the ecotec doesnt have any backup tunes for maf failure - ever tried to start/run a ecotec without the maf plugged in? it doesnt work.
although the LS1 does have a similar function, it has a map sensor as well as the maf, so it can very easily be converted to mafless.

yep i have. Just after i got my car the maf shorted out. So i pulled it out, then drove to the wreckers and got a new one, drove home then fitted it.
Also i spoke to Dr. Bob about it when i was talking about getting my mafless tune, he suggested programming it into the maf fail maps.

interesting, thats fair enough then. ive tried running an ecotec a few times without the maf either there or just not plugged in and it always dies straight away.

Interesting. It will be very interesting to see, I know my factory memcal had these maps, but i wonder if my tuned memcal has the map, or will just die in the ass...
