well let the "dont spend money on a n/a 6 posts begin"! lol
anyway man, it all comes down to how much your willing to spend - when you say apprentice, are you a mechanic apprentice?? this would help heaps in keeping cost down a bit if you can do all the labour.
most of the time id advise against a cam change because of all the costs involved, but if you can do the labour then it really shouldnt end up costing all that much.
a decent size cam profile - something 220 degrees duration or bigger - with some more compression from shaving/milling the heads a few thou and maybe port the heads or just tidy up around the heads and intake manifold with a die grinder will see some nice gains.
all i can say is put the money where its usefull, dont waste it on crap like a larger throttle body, higher flowing injectors or any other useless gear people seem to think will make more power.
basically a good cam (change the way the engine breathes), plus more compression (cant stress that enough - n/a engines loooove more compression, especially with a cam that needs it) and good intake and exhaust flow will net gains.

amen sircruisealot. I agree. Decent cam, compression, and improved air flow into the motor and exhaust is the basic principles of getting power out of almost any engine.

When I first got my current VS ute it had a cam, extractors, CAI, exhaust and some kind of off the shelf "chip" in it and it used to get along ok. My previous car was a VS 5L ute and I dont reckon there was much in it performance wise. Good suspension setup makes a car feel a lot faster in terms of actually being able to go quuickly round corners etc too.

'bout a day man, depends how good the bloke doing it is - could be done in half a day if they're really quick at taking the top end off.
