Stock Ecotec heads are good for about 0.520 max valve lift so any more then that will mean the valve spring retainers may contact the stem seals. Modded retainers are avilable to give a little more lift but without supporting mods it may be pointless.

its not neccessarily hard, its just time consuming.
as for how big you can go without mods - you'd want a good full exhaust already, thats pretty much a given. with that you'd be looking at probably 200 degrees duration or so as being the biggest you should go without needing other mods like some head work, more compression, stallie if its an auto...
but then thats almost pointless because the small gain you'd get from a cam that size wouldnt be worth the coin it costs you to buy, fit and then tune.

as for cost you can pay anywhere from a couple of hundred for a cam grind or re-grind, to around a grand for a cam package with a generic performance tune to suit the cam. you can get cams from alot of places, some of the more well known are places like crow cams, c.o.m.e. racing and wade cams.
