Default MAF-less tune

Hey guys, i'ts almost time for me to have a dyno tune and I just wanted to start a discussion about the advantages / disadvantages of getting a mafless tune done.
I assume the only benefit of removing the MAF sensor is a less restrictive air flow to the engine, but will removing it result in a 'rougher' type of tune... a bit of a estimated tune???

My questions are:

- Is this something that any old dyno tuner can do for me? Or is it a pretty specialised tune that you really have to be experienced in?

- Is this going to be much more expensive than a standard dyno tune?

- The car in question is a n/a ecotec with bolt on's (rockers, exhaust/xtractors, TB, manifold insulator, plugs/leads, CAI/filters etc), Is the mafless tune worthwhile on a n/a engine or am I being ridiculous???

It'll be my first dyno tune and i'ts still new to me... so go easy on me

unfortunatly doing a MAF-less tune on a VS ecotec isn't as straight forward as it is on the LS1/2 etc. the VS ecotec doesn't have a MAP sensor fitted (the later LS1/2 etc have both the MAF and MAP sensor fitted from factory)

to do a mafless tune you will first need to get a MAP sensor fitted. kalmaker have this sorted now so it can be done. last time is heard blue-chip (previous site sponsor) was doing this conversion.

getting rid of the MAF sensor does remove one more restriction from the intake.

it has been debated a few times on this site on which setup is better and/or (as in this case) which makes more power. i certainly beleive that the MAP sensor setup is better for making power (otherwise why do all the LS1/2 guys bother with it). MAP based setup takes longer to tune, it's not a simple plug it in and go arrangement. the MAF setup is easier to tune from a mass-produced point of view and is most likely the reason manufacturers go with that setup.

one of the raptor charged boys converted his VS to MAP and made another 10rwkw from memory

What are the legal ramifications of a MAF-less tune?

What effect does it have on emissions?

What state are you in mate? Do you have a warrented reason to go MAF-less? The only 6's that really have are the L67 guys runnings big power (300+hp)

^^^ Yeah thats another good point, is it legal??? I'm guessing as long as you can meet emissions requirements it'd be alright.

My other thought was to use a boared out MAF with the honeycomb removed but will I have trouble with tuning a modified MAF?

Im in VIC... Just trying to squeeze what I can out of my n/a setup (like everyone else I guess). I'm trying to reach a goal of 150rwkw (manual).
Been playing with intake setups and just wanted to remove all restrictions along the way.

would it be easier just to get it tuned with a ls1 maf? and still get rid of some restriction?

Anyone using the MACE bored out MAF?

Check out link if you haven't seen them:

BORED OUT AND POLISHED 74MM AIRFLOW METER Holden VS-VY - eBay Engine Modifications, Performance Parts, Car Parts, Accessories, Cars, Bikes, Boats. (end time 06-Sep-08 23:45:22 AEST)

If I can get a dyno tuner to do a decent tune with one of these then I wouldn't bother with mafless at all... but will it give accurate readings without the honeycomb in there to direct and stabilise the air flow over the sensors?

you can only fit the bored out MAF when getting it tuned. won't run without a tune
