    Default Vt 5 litre question

Ive got a vt 5 litre engine im using in a 4wd conversion

I have the air intake manifold and fuel rails and injectors off at the moment

When i crank should i see oil coming up ? if so im not getting any

Ive got a new sump and oil pick up with the gasket on it too, i filled the sump up with oil to the proper level and pulled out the oil pressure switch on the oil pump and put oil in there till it run out of it and filled up the oil filter

Is there anyother way to prime the pump, ive had a search on here but couldnt find anything specific to priming the oil pump, want to make sure i have oil coming up before i put the manifold back on, plus i want to test the hall effect switch to make sure its working ok, as its so easy to change the dizzy now if i need to, ive got a new dizzy from ebay from one of the sellers we hear so many bad things about, im sure you know who, just wondering if i should use that or not ? can't get a new dizzy through holden anymore or even the hall effect switch from them.

    thanks for your input

Normally if we need to prime the oil pump, we pack it with grease, fill the filter with oil and chuck it on (will make a bit of mess)....and if that don't work try unscrewing the filter a bit while someone cranks the motor. Not sure wat it does but we were told that by someone and it worked.....and do it back up when ur done.

i dunno how much oil you are gonna get from cranking the starter tho. doubt it'd be enough pressure to push the oil into the rockers. it might oil the lifters eventually, but yeah. doubt itll go up the pushrods.

but yeah what danny said, prime the pump by grease and filing the filter.

as far as the chinease dizzy goes, they are fine on pre-efi 308's the magnets in it are crap as are the HEI units so stock magnets and HEI are better but if your using hall effects then the magnets get ditched anyways so it shouldnt be a problem.

ive found the best way is to pull oil pump off fill the filter up with oil and screw it back on and then pour some more oil in the oil pump galleries then start turning the oil pump gear backwards and forwards and u will start seeing the oil disapearing and u should feel the pump starting to work and get harder to turn one way, keep turning the hardest way( i think its clockwise) and the oil should be disapearing from one of the oil gallery holes and out the other, keep turning pump and adding oil for a couple of turns and it should be good to go! next trick is to get it back on ya motor b4 the oil runs out.

Pull the pump off, pack it with vaseline, put it back on the engine. Fill the oil filter with oil, screw that back on and fire the engine up. Don't waste your time trying to get oil pressure on the starter, prime it and start it. It will pick up oil pressure instantly.

It takes most 304's a couple minutes to get oil to the rockers if the haven't been started in a while, so don't expect to see any instantly when cranking it

the grease creates a seal between the two gears in your oil pump and sucks through the new oil. if the gears are dry its just metal on metal and no suction.

Nah ya should be ok. There's 4 bolts to undo around the outside of the pump, which shouldn't be to tight, and the pump should slide out, ya might have to wiggle it around a bit, but should come pretty easy....might have to use a rubber mallet to tap it a few times to start it coming out.

Also get a new gasket for it.

Prolly best to give it an oil change after a few k's. I don't think it will do anything to the oil. We changed the oil pump the day b4 we went in a burnout comp, filled it up with grease, everything was ok and didn't worry bout giving it an oil change....it did drop oil pressure while idling at the comp, but I'm 99% sure it's a dicky gauge.

Nothing should come flying out at all. Should just be a couple of shafts and gears in there. Pay special note to which way the gears face, they're very slightly asymmetrical.

And as said above, don't even bother trying to get oil pressure by dry cranking. It'll never happen - I tried for days. Just pack the pump full, bolt it on, screw on a full oil filter, and fire the car up. I did this with a pressure gauge screwed into my oil pressure sensor, and it reached 30psi within a second.

Packed the oil pump with vaso, after a decent crank i had some oil pumping up into the valley not much, but before it was dry so the pump is doing its job, just waiting to get my reco injectors to put in then put it all back together and should be able to fire it up

    thanks again
