from experience i can recommend the "blue racer" brand stage 5 hydraulic if u want a cheap cam that suits a daily driver (its a crane cam with a blue racer grind. vpw sell them) specs are 496thou lift, 224degrees duration at 50 thou lift, i forget what lobe separation but its 112degrees +

i had one years ago in my 308 4speed hq (ported black heads, stock port matched manifold, 650d/p, extractors into twin 2.25in pipes, 3.5 diff gears) it was a good thing, chunky lopeing idle, i dunno how my engine builder degreed it in but it pulled hard to 6 grand, had good torque down low, could drive it like a normal stocker, excellent economy on the highway, not too bad around town if i was nice to it but it was thirsty if i opened it up a bit.

there are plenty of bigger cams out there but this one has a definate note to it and ya can live with it everyday driving no worries whatsoever.

    Default Sorry about the dig!

    First up:

    1) sorry for the thread dig!

    2) sorry if this has been asked before...

What cam would people recomend in a stock vk 308 black motor?
Non re built just a relatively good nic 308 that I'm wanting to cam until I can save for a proper hi comp rebuild..

After- slightly lumpy idle with a good exhaust note, good mid range power and don't give a snot about fuel...

Can anyone help me out with some wisdom?

No, you want a "lumpy" idle. Contrary to popular belief, the lumpy idle isn't the sole purpose of an aftermarket/performance camshaft. Honestly, if you want to fit a cam just for an idle sound, don't bother as chances are the car will go slower.

And contrary to common belief not everyone asking questions on forums are idiots... Some just like to hear others oppinions who have already done the same thing. Crazy huh?

I am well aware of how a camshaft works bud, I'm hoping people can say I run a (insert cam specs) and it behaves....

The main reason is I want more power, not buckets, just a tad more.
And the fact I like a slightly lumpy idle (not savage mind you) is just a personal taste.

If you have expertise in the area or experience I'm all ears, I'm not a young punk nor someone who likes to piss there money away. I'm well aware you are right, a lumpy can isn't always a quick cam.. hence asking what's been used before with similar results.

In a stock 308, i wouldn't go any bigger than a Crane 276 (or equivalent). It won't give an overly lumpy idle but it'll run rings around a bigger cam in the same engine. We built a 355 at work and we used the 276, it works really nicely even in a higher comp bigger cube engine. If you want to go any bigger than that, save your money untill you can afford to put a set of flat tops in it and do the job properly.

Thankyou mate that's the exact info, and cam ironicly (atleast I know I'm on the right path) that I'm after.

As said I plan to run the cam and then build a new motor with flatties etc after..
So that kinda info is great, cheers...

If I'm correct that should give good power From 1800rpm? Ie real world rpm on a street stock ish 308?

you should get good power around that range from a stockie...

what else is done to the engine to help it breathe? intake/exhaust/ignition?

There's more than just one manufacturer of cams for the Holden V8.

Why does everyone instantly refer to Crane Cams like they are the 'be all and end all'?

If you have a true understanding of camshafts, you should know what lift, duration and lobe separation you want or require and get what you want ground up. Why people bother going to the expense of an off-the-shelf cam for an un-off-the-shelf engine is beyond me.

    Just my 2c anyways.
