i have a stock 5L vn want a bit more power i was thinking of replacing the coil with a msd coil what do i need to get for msd coil to work or is it a straight swap over or any other bolt on ways to get a bit more power
Total waste of money on a stock 5 litre. Just buy a bosch mec718 (? - I think it's 718 - def mec, not HEC!!!) and a decent set of leads.

MSD won't give you more power its just a better ignition system, throw up what mods you've got and maybe we can help you!!
you should get a mallory. know why? cos mallory give you a sticker! then you can stick it in your back window so everyone knows you have a mallory coil.
so in summary: any ignition mods on a stock engine are a waste of $$$
i thought msd gives more spark at the moment car is stock just cai and k&n filter
Just one LS1 coil will do better then most other coils....

bosch mec coil will still be all it needs. Unless the car has a relatively new coil I'd recommend changing it as a matter of course when bringing things up to their optimum. The main advantage with MSD type ignitions are better spark at higher rpm but without significant internal and intake mods your humble 5.0 just won't be able to realize msd's potential.

a MSD coil only is just like any other HEI coil. No advantage over the Bosch unit
you need the entire MSD ignition system (including module) if you want the advantages of multiple spark discharge. But even then I don't think they are worth the money. The factory HEI ignition system on the 5L is a very capable system. It will pump out in excess of 35,000 volts
