Bought a VS Stato yesterday, and it doesn't run to flash. First time we started it she didn't seem to fire all cylinders for a few seconds, so had trouble starting, idling sounds maybe a bit rough, either that or it's cammed, but I dunno the history of the motor. General driving is ok and when ya accelerate slowly it builds up speed ok, but if ya mash the pedal is coughs, farts and dies, unless ya catch it straight away and take a foot off the go pedal and let it go back to a idle, then slowly put ur foot down again.
Anyone know where to start? When I get me VT off defect I'll spend a few bucks on the Stato, figured I might start with new plugs, leads, dizzy cap and rotor button and go from there.

Do these use an air flow meter?
Here's the donk.

might need a new rotor button and dizzy cap
no it doesn't use an AFM, it uses a MAP sensor instead
are there any mods ? Factory memcal/chip ?
is the check engine light flashing ? If so, check for codes
I'd also suggest checking the MAP sensor hose that runs from the MAP, through the centre of the manifold and attaches at the front of the manifold just behind the throttle body neck (you may need to remove the throttle body to see it). Very common for the hose to kink where it plugs into the manifold as it is a 90 degree bend. It will cause all kinds of problems if the hose is restricted/blocked.
Easiest way to check is to remove the hose from the MAP sensor end and blow through it. If you can't blow through the hose easily, then it's blocked.
Ah ok, blew in the hose and it seems fine. Wouldn't have a clue if it has any mods. Didn't notice any engine light flashing....but the ABS doesn't work so I guess that light should be flashing too, but isn't, so maybe a few globes are missing.
How do I check the codes?

all the globes should light up with the ignition 'on' but not started
if it was a series 3 vs statesman with a roller 5ltr it would have had an AFM.
But ima gonna go with rotr button dissy cap aswell.
Check your error codes and bulbs in cluster cluster is easy to remove so it wouldnt take long. Does the oil light work?

do some investigation- ecu diagnosis, compression test, check for vaccum leaks and so on- could be losing a cylinder- check for blowback, injector not firing- if its been cammed perhaps not run in properly- faulty lifter- faulty rocker gear
