Hey all,
Today I wired up some twin thermo's from a EL to my VR 5 Litre, now iv put Twin thermo's on and have them running constant (putting a Davies, Craig switch in tomorrow) but iv made it so iv got a over ride switch to turn them off.
Anyway having them running constantly the gauge barely moved of the resting point thing on the cluster.......... So I though id check the radiator hose to see how hot it was and if there was pressure there, I could squeeze the hose and hold it with ease even after the car had been running for a good 25-30 mins. as soon as I turned the fans off the temp started to rise like normal (so I knew the cluster worked), pressure built up like normal so I turned the fans back on and not long after tuning them on the temp started to go back down and lost the pressure in the top radiator hose...........
Its a VR Worked and Charged 5 litre......
What im wanting to know is would it be ok for the engine to be running that cool if I was to leave the fans running constantly?
Is it bad to have no pressure and heat from the water hose?
94 Red VR 5 Litre 5 Speed Super Charged and intercooled = Alot of fun!
It is my opinion that you should try and run the motor at about 85-95 for best results
The engine runs most efficiently when hot, so keeping it too cool won't be doing it any good.
By the sounds of it, The car wasn't even moving. So ofcourse it was running cool...
Common Sense there ^_^

Hotter for economy, slightly cooler for power but not cold. It sounds like the thermostat either isn't working or isn't fitted. I'd recommend fitting a 180 degree F (82* C) thermostat. Running the engine that cold will also make it chew through fuel. Keeping the thermos running al the time is a complete waste of time, as mentioned earlier it is just huge load on the electrical system and the thermos will do absolutely nothing once you get up to cruising speed as the natural airflow through the radiator will be more then enough to keep everything at the proper working temps

Why did you put the thermo's on anyway? I just took mine off and put the clutch fan and shroud back on after messing about with the thermos for ages. Temp stays constant 88 degrees C now and air con works much better.
If you must have the thermos go and get a drift brand thermo controller($180) and adaptor for your top ($20)hose to install the temp sensor. This will give you automatic control of the fans and an in cabin digital readout for temp and volts and setting for fan on and off.

IF you really want to set the thermo's up properly you would wire it into the factory fitted thermo circuit (only used for the A/C fan on V8 models) and then alter the thermo on/off settings in the tune to suit temperature of the thermostat you use.

Engine running to cold will do rings
