    Default (308) Building my motor.

Thought I'd open a thread to help with the build of my 308.

    I currently run a 253 ( sick of it. ) so I've organized a 308.

I'm dreaming of 200rwkw but to be realistic.. i guess 150-170ish?
The funds for this motor will be my weekly pay check which ranges from 250-500 a week. So i guess saving is a option when it comes to the expensive parts.

So i have a suspected 'blue motor' block.
Recently Hot tanked and honed with a brand new crank.

Where do i go from here fellas?

Select a cam that will make approx 200kw that you can live with, cam selection will be the most important steps in the build, have your builder match the compression ratio to the cam and enjoy.
As the other guys have stated, VN heads will make good power but maybe a bit lazy on a stock stroke 308 with a carby.

I agree with your list apart from the MSD stuff. Nice, but not necessary considering he's on a fairly tight budget
Factory blue/black HEI distributor/ignition will be every bit as good on this combo. Agree on the coil though, the Bosch coils are crap now they are made in China.

At the moment mostly everything is stock.

    Hot tanked/honed red block
    272 solid cam
    Brand new crank
    stock heads
    stock manifold
    and so on..
So i've been told.. knowing my luck, probably a load of bullshit but ohwell.

Bought it in pieces. Wanted the experience of putting a motor together. Parts list is above ^

Well.. I got ripped big time.

Thinking that just a 308 is kind of pointless.

Considering it'll be roughy what.. 5grand? Thinking of going 355 instead?

so what came with the bundle to make you feel ripped?
you'll have to prep your block either way 308 or 355 so it's not much more to relieve the block for stroker clearances whilst it's being prepped.
you have a choice to either go with the solid cam setup and red heads or sell off the unneeded bits and use vn heads

do you have the patience to check your clearances and lash for a solid cam setup? if not... probably wiser to sell that cam and go for a hydraulic one or a roller setup.

The pistons are all seized, the manifolds corroding, cylinder bores need to be re-honed. Heads need a lot of attention and so on.

I'm thinking of taking the block down to the machine shop and asking if it's worth stroking it. If not I guess I'll stick to 308?
