my 5 litre VT Calais turns over but won't start. NRMA man thought it was the coil, mechanic said not. Mechanic thinks it's something electrial, suggested I remove key, lock it with the button, unlock, turn key till lights come on and fuel pump(?) motor sound stops, turn off, wait a few seconds, repeat 3 or 4 times then she should fire up, and she does. Anyone any idea what the problem is? Am I going to be stranded?

Check error codes.
that's spooky, I just downloaded the info from another member and planned to do that tomorrow! Thanks for your reply, much appreciated.
And FYI, VT's dont have a 308.
Check for power at the coil, if no power is present check for power to the EFI relay and then make sure its clicking, if not short pins 30 to 87 (same as what the relay does when you turn the key on) and then test for power again.
looks like a V8, sounds like a V8, Holden make 308 V8, 308 is 5 litre, Holden put 5 litre in the VT Calais, rego says VT V8, what more can I say?
ever since the day he was born, fluffy knew that he was not like all the other 454's. "GO AWAY and play in your silverado C3500" they would all say to him, laughing and snickering as he slowly loped away in his truck with his lowly 530NM of torque. but one day, one day, Fluffy knew he would grow up to power a 66 impala, and would be the talk of all the other 454's.
Turning the key on and off a few trimes primes the fuel system, if you have to do that to get it to start, then I would be looking at the fuel pump.
To add to the 308/304 information, late VK changed to 304 to comply to the new touring car rules. The rules stated the engine capacity had to be UNDER 5.0L so they changed the engine to a 4.9L 304.

Also pull out one of your plugs ground it and turn it over. Get someone to watch for a spark.
coil and fuel pump seem okay. error codes did not show anything wrong. auto electrician checking on his workshop computer says a few things show up but needs to reset it (probably showing old things wrong) and see what shows up.......
injecter pulse maybe??
Have you tried another ignition module. When this problem occurs this should be 1 of the 1st things checked, you won't get an error code on it but.
9/10 times it's your ignition module!!! Maybe try your spare key!!
Thanks all, will try these ideas. Since starting problem, She's been running really rough on a hot start (if at all). I did spark plugs, leads, no better, new coil, not much better, new injectors and fuel pump, a bit better again, new oil and filter, new coolant, water and radiator hoses, new belts ( cause I could ) and will do rotor and distributor cap when I can get to them and put injector cleaner through the next tank of fuel. She still starts and idles 1000 or 2000 revs low or high first cold start then is okay but sometimes feels like she'll miss a beat when changing gears or speed. what next then?
new key didn't help, sometimes a dead connection, new battery may help, so we'll see!
new key didn't help :-(. Did new spark plugs and leads, coil, injectors and fuel filter, oil and oil filter, water, coolant and radiator hoses, belts ( cause I could ). Will do distributor cap and rotor when i can get to it ( how hard is that?) and put injector cleaner in next tank of fuel. Oh and a new battery. She still idles low or high on a cold start or changing to reverse, and feels like she might miss a beat under power or on gear change.
Now she has a grinding sound in the back on a tight turn, a bit like a tyre scrubbing on the inner guard but it's not. Diff maybe or something with the brakes? There's also a rattle underneath when going slow, I thought it was exhaust rattle after going over low drive way but had it fixed and it's still there. Hand brake bits loose maybe?
