What options do we have for the 5L? Near-stock application.
Cheers

Really? Nobody knows anything about possible valve spring upgrades for the 5L, or maybe high-ratio roller rockers or similar??
These just seem like a good (cost effective) way to freshen up the heads, or am I entirely wrong? What benefits do they have in terms of what you'll notice on the street?
Any info appreciated
Cheers

dude. the setup on my car was a kit from crow cams
you get valve springs, lifters, collets, a stage three cam, and a memcal for a decent price. goes alot better. its an easy place to start from. have a look at them mate.
I'm not really looking for a cam though... Daily driver and I don't want to blow my fuel economy. Don't get me wrong I'd love to slot in the lumpiest cam I could get my hands on, it just wouldn't be practical for me.
These were just ideas to give the top of the motor a little freshen-up. No good?
higher ratio rockers and a set of extractors will pep it up a bit. get it a good dyno tune.
You should'nt need new springs.
Well the standard rockers are 1.6:1 Yella Terra supply a 1.65:1 ratio.
There are other ratios provided by other manufacturers.
I have JBA 1.7:1 rollers.
the thing is, its the new trendy thing to fit higher ratio rockers as it substitutes a cam swap to a degree.
I believe personally that the valve lift should be controlled by the cam profile, with the cam designed with those particular rocker ratios, but each to thier own.
Theyre actually designed more so to reduce side loading on the stem and reduce inherent friction in high load applications where the standard stamped rocker cant take it.
So you can get higher ratio roller rockers for the 5L??
OK it's question time:
No re-tuning required right, they're just a bolt-on swap?
Do they fit under the standard rocker covers?
Power gain / practical difference? Good move on stock engine?
What's a set worth and who can I go through to order some?
Once again, any info appreciated as I've never really had anything to do with head or valvetrain work before - everything I've done has been external bolt-on parts.
Cheers
Sam
Stroke it: Stock rocker ratio is 1.65:1 YT rockers only come in standard ratio.
Can you get roller rockers from anywhere reputable for the 5L? High ratio would be nice, but rollers are just all-round better, right?
mate grab ya phone book and call someone like yella terra or come or hps for xample have a chat to some one who does them every day....
That's a good plan. I may just have to do that
Thanks

To put it simply mate, $$$ vs Kw its not worth it. We gained about 6rwkw in the very top end of the power scale (over 4800rpm) on my SS.......and that is with YT billet adjustable rockers of which are worth around $950.
Selling FG G6E Turbo and buying a N/A Supra
ok fair enough. I was just wondering what I can do to freshen up the heads a little bit.. I've never had anything to do with this particular area
I know the roller rockers are pretty popular with at least the Ecotec engine, I thought maybe they'd be good for a 5L too..
OK well that just leaves me with the question about valve springs. Worth doing? Engine has around 270,000km and a fair bit of hard driving under its belt...

I do not know what that is. Nearest thing I've heard of is valve bounce.. similar thing?? Seriously I'm interested to learn about this valve float thing.

Valve float and valve bounce are the same thing just different terms. If its suffering from valve float/bounce then by all means replace them. If not then they should be fine, however at 270,000 they will be getting fairly tired so it wouldnt hurt to replace them if you want to.
How do I tell whether I'm valve bouncing or it's just a rev limit?? My VN V6 I'm pretty sure bounces but I'm not 100% (not surprising with 420,000km on her), the VR seems to do a similar thing but it could just be a limiter...

Any takers? I don't know how to tell the difference.
