Default Exhaust for 308 in Nissan Patrol...

    Hi Guys,

I have just bought a SWB Patrol with a 308, The car still has the original exhaust from the 2.8ltr 6 cylinder engine it used to have... The previous owner has just married the two engine pipes into a collector and then welded it to existing 2" system....

What I wan't to know is, Am I best going for a single 3" sports system or a twin 2.5"??

I want this Car to sound like the beast it is, without being too loud, Nice and deep with a good growl to it....
Sadly I cannot hook up extractors, as the Engine mounts are too bulky and will not allow anything other than standard exhaust manifolds.... But the rest of the system is up to me.....

The engine is 3000km old from reco, Towing type Camshaft Grind, Larger Valves in heads, 4 barrel Manifold, otherwise stock, 5 spd Manual Box with 4.11:1 Diffs......

I want a new system on it this week, so any advice would be great..Cheers.

it really depends on what you want out of it, lots of peak power, or low down grunt? for peak power go for bigger pipes, if you want more low down torque then go for smaller pipes. probably a twin system with X pipe would be best

    Default Thanks anyway...

Its all good, Booked in tomorrow for full new system....

Leaving Exhaust Manifolds, and starting from engine pipes back.
It will have new Engine pipes, and 2 into 1 collector, then it will have a single 2.5" system with Lukey straight through Muffler and hot dog at rear,
Supplied and fitted $290..... Not Bad!!

VY goes in Wednesday, for two Hot Dogs under rear floor to take the Bark out of it....$120 Fitted....Think he likes me...lol...

But it's a 308 with stock manifolds on it. The car pretty much dictates what system to use. We have done a lot of V8 exhausts in 4WD's and a single 2 1/2" is the best option. There is no point in going bigger as the stock manifolds don't flow that well, anything too big will just lose too much back pressure (exhaust velocity) and the car will not perform at all. The only real option for a twin would be a twin 2", but the transfer case is in the way and it is bloody tight going getting a pipe down the LHS. Also, where is the second muffler going to go? The fuel tank takes up a lot of room on the LHS too. You could run them side by side, bit IMO, a single 2 1/2" is the way to go.

On the extractor side of things, you can get block huggers, but from memory only the Genie ones go on the Patrols because of the way the pipes are where they go into the collector.

Ahh, Block Huggers...I will inquire about them

Yeh 2.5" is what My Exhaust Man recommends, He says he will have it sounding Tuff as.........Hopefully.... Apparently the bigger the Muffler the deeper it will sound...???

It's no Ball tearer, just a healthy 5.0, so I think 3" is a bit over the top and it will end up way too loud!!.......

Thats generally the way it works, but also bigger = quieter. Try and get a centre expansion type muffler, not a straight through one as they tend to be deeper as well. The straight through ones are a bit raspy.

    Default Expansion Muffler..

Yeh the centre expansion Muffler is what he showed me, its still straight through, but the internal pipe stops and the muffler opens into a chamber in the middle, then the exit pipe starts and is identical to the inlet pipe.. If that makes sense...lol

    Thanks for your help.

That truly is a crap exhaust, but I have seen worse. The sooner you can get that rubbish off, the better the car will feel and sound.

    Default Finished yet??/

OOohhh, I'm getting edgy..... Can't wait to hear it.

Dropped it off at 8am, and it was straight on the hoist....
I told him to take his time, as I wanted it to be neat and impressive to look at, And It didn't matter if it was a bit more expensive for the time spent doing just that....

I will put up some pic's when it is done.

I also cleaned up some of the wiring last night... it was pretty bad!!

Ended up taking off the centre expansion Muffler...it was way too loud!! Outrageous...so he said...lol. or has he shafted me with a cheaper muffler for the same price?? Its not very loud, and induction takes over very quickly at full throttle.....

Not sure what type of Muffler is on it now, but it does sound OK....
(Help us out not_an_abba_fan) What type of muffler is it????? Any good?

Judging by that heat mark at the front I would say it is a tri flow muffler. Not very straight through at all. Centre expansions are loud to start with, but they tend to get a bit quieter as the glass packing loosens up and they build up a bit of carbon. If that heat mark starts turning a blueish colour, it means it is too restrictive and is starting to glow. Does it make a kind of pshhh sound out the tail pipe?

    Dude, you know your sh!t!!

Nah it doesn't sound restricted, but it is quite!!
He has my VY now, I will take it back when I pick that up and ask him to fit the centre expansion if you think it is worth it!!
I was quoted for that, so I will ask for it....

Don't get me wrong, centre expansions are loud, not as loud as "megaflow" type mufflers that have a perf tube running through them but loud none the less. Depending on what he has in stock, you can get a 16" long chambered (centre expansion) muffler.

He has all sizes in stock, he showed me them yesterday!!
Do you recomend I ask for one of them?
I want it to be tuff, I think at the moment, it sounds like it has a stock 308 with stockish exhaust!!

Yeah mate, take it back. The muffler sounds to be too restrictive anyway. Ask him to put a 16" long chambered muffler on it. Will make it louder, deeper and probably give it a bit more go up top.
