    Default VK 308 berlina questions

hey guys, recently picked up a vk 308 that had been sitting for a month or two. done a service and it runs fairly good. just a few little things that i would like to iron out.

    1. when u give the throttle a sharp hit it nearly stalls, though if u ease on the throttle or tap it quickly a few times it revs not bad. spraying carb cleaner definitely made this a lot better, but still does it.

    2. stalls when put in reverse, on an up hill slope it wont reverse, goes fine down hill lol.

    3. tacho and temp guage dont work, where are they picked up from and what does the sensor look like? i'm pulling the dash out soon to check the air con and what not, so i'll have a look there.

im sure there is other little things, but i can remember right now.

any info would be great, cheers

    jason.

check ur timing mate, this can throw the motor out of wack pretty good. I would aim for around 10 deg advanced and see how you go. Check all the spark plugs or better yet replace them all. Look under the dizzy cap and see how the contact points look, also the rotor button, those can cause some rough rides. Make sure all the vacuum hoses are good, since carbs rely solely on vacuum a vac leak will throw it out also this being a black 308 there are HEAPING SHIT-TONNES OF VAC HOSES, i should know ive got one . Get a new air filter if u havent already, $10 well spent there

And with ur reverse problem you must be low on auto fluid (im guessing its an auto ). Park it onto a flat surface and put a brick on the front tires. Start the car and put it into D and then pull out the dip stick-wipe it and then check the reading. You have to do this cause the torque converter sucks the fluid from the trans pan and puts it through the trans lowering the fluid level in the pan. If the car is off and u check it it seems litres over filled.

Here is a pic of where the temp sensors are, not much to them really. Just a wire that is connected to them. The tacho runs off the electric signal on the ignition coil for the dizzy. Not sure which wire this is but maybe someone on here can enlighten me.

Thats all i can think about right now mate, but let us know how it all goes

yeah mate, new plugs and leads, new oil, oil filter, fuel filter, air filter, and yeah when i cheked the auto fluid it seemed over full, but then i read that i'm supposed to run till warm, shift through all gears then turn off and put the dip stick in and out quickly before it all flows out of the converter and gears and such, so atm i guess its full. i will check the level tomoz properly. the vaccum hoses have me stumped, stupid manual doesnt label them all so i'm not 100% sure how they go.

either way, tomorrow i'll give it all a look over.

    cheers mate.

    Paiste is on the money.
Another reason for it stalling in reverse (but normally in D aswell) is the Vacuum line going to the trans can get blocked with crap and cause it to stall, worth checking.

Scott has Vacuum layouts on his website, if they arnt clear enough, then I can send them to you if you PM me a email.

Scott's website, hes also a member on here so if he sees this he should be able to help you out.

For the Tacho, the Green wire should be going to the Coil, the black to a ground(earth) and white to a dash panel light, but thats for aftermarket, not sure on factory, let me know if you want me to check.

hmmm its best to leave it running in D to get a true reading, cause turning the car off never worked for me, had to keep her runnin. Hmmm well since uve done everything else i reckon tom is right with the trans vac line. Get some ramps and its at the back of the trans near the tail shafts beginning into the trans. Also i would pull each vac hose off one at a time and check for softless/brittleness and cracks and then place it back. Get a white paint pen and mark the cracked or in bad nic ones and replace them later. If u put them back afterwords one at a time u cant mix em up

The best investment when working with Vacuum lines, its like a white out pen, but called a white permanent marker lol, you will quickly learn how valuable it is.

Some of my answers in Blue to your comments.

    1. when u give the throttle a sharp hit it nearly stalls, though if u ease on the throttle or tap it quickly a few times it revs not bad. spraying carb cleaner definitely made this a lot better, but still does it.

Ok this is a common problem for all Rochesters even some holleys that have been sitting around for a while..., two things to check here.

A)Take your air cleaner off, look down the front side of the carbie, when you pump the carbie, eg. simulate accellerating it should be squirting some fuel down the throat. (If this isn't happening you have either a worn accellerator pump plunger rubber, (this will need disassembly of carbie)

B)or it's the ball-bearing at the bottom of the accellerator pump plunger that is jammed. or stuck, usually held in with a screw tap (this will need disassembly of carbie)
This will cause it to scavange for petrol under quick throttle, when you gradually accellerate the metering rods kick in and compensate.

    2. stalls when put in reverse, on an up hill slope it wont reverse, goes fine down hill lol.

I would defineately check vacuum hoses for this one, mainly

    A) vacuum advance vacuum hose comes from the dissy to the front of the carbie (but some people can plug this vacuum line at the back to put motor in always advanced mode.

    B) the other one to check would be from trans shift module (side of trans to manifold) - usually this will also cause your trans to have longer shifts between gears

lol, my tacho started working...straightened the steering wheel and found that my air con fan works, so it must be wiring or something in the dash.
