The starter motor in the VC 202 has died, took it out and took it to an auto electrician and he said he could repair it but there were some issues he could not guarantee, problem in the amature being the main one. The options are:
Repair/reco it but sounds a bit iffy, he did not have a change over in stock - $150 to $160.
He has a brand new 'Mitsubishi Brand' for $220, said it would bolt straight in.
Rang a few other auto elects there changeovers were around $160, but I thought what would I be buying may have the same issues as my old one and pack it in inside a few months, and they are a prick to get out. (How many times have they been recond before).
Rang a few other auto elecs re Bosch starters - Got conflicting prices here, cheapest was $203, didn't have one but could get one in, rang another re Bosch got quoted $280 for a new Bosch,
Repco wanted $340 for a new Bosch. Don't know why the big difference.
And just to add to the mix one auto elec had a brand I have never heard of called 'OEX'
which I would say is a Chinese or Korean brand not to say the others aren't made there,
quoted me $154 on that one.
What would you go for? Was going to go down the reco path but after what the guy told me about mine and not being able to guarantee it I thought how do I know if I get a change over that I am not getting some one elses one patched up, they are after all 28 years old, not like getting a newer car recond. And may have been recond several times before.
Not sure which way to jump.

id go cheapest but i can rebuild them lol
Had a look on ebay. Brand New Gear Reduction Starter Motor Holden 6cyl. - eBay, Other Car Parts, Accessories, Car Parts, Accessories, Cars, Bikes, Boats. (end time 21-Jul-09 20:38:43 AEST)
Looks to be a cheaper copy of the bosch starter. I don't see why it wouldn't be any good and you could buy 2 for the price of one geniune bosch.
i paid 400 for my reducer starter for 308 and worth every penny. i killed 2 standard starters on my headers, so the choice was obvious for me.
i am always of the opinion that if you have to take the part off the car, then why not improve it?
i work for supercheap and we can order in OEX products... they actually arent too bad in their quality![]()
three simple words (u pull it)
oex is good. i'd say 60% of the starters we fit at work would be oex. if you ask this auto elec what the number of the oex unit is, RXSxxx will be a rebuilt unit, MXSxxx is a new unit.
