Hey guys,
Just got my hands on a VK V8 diff (for my rear disc brake conv) and I came accross something I was not ready for. I just want to know if this is how things should be and not horribly wrong.
When I pulled the axles out to check the bearings I was expecting to see the bearings packed with grease and an oil seal inside. All I found was the bearings full of diff oil and a clear view all the way through to the middle. Is this how it should be?
Please see the pics and tell me everythings ok! I'm replacing the bearings for my own piece of mind anyway but it would be good to know if anyone can spot anything I don't know about.
Thanks guys.
as long as they dont wobble around too much they are fine.
the four bolts on the flange press them into the bearing seat on the diff housing. and yes they are lubed' by diff oil.
also its a good idea to check the flange for flatness. cos itf it isnt flat enuff' the bearings wont seat completely. looks fine in the pics to me.
Great. Thanks a lot for that.
The middle picture of the cup in the housing, you can see a band on the cup, this menas the harding has started to wear off. I would be replacing the bearings.
Should I replace the cup aswell?
Yes. That is the main problem from what I can see in the picture. It comes as a set anyway, you will get the bearing, the cup, the retainer and the seal.
Next issue.
The bearings I got from my local auto bits place gave me the ones pictured below. When I checked them out in the store they were a greased packed bearing with an oil seal! WTF? I asked him to check them again and he came up with the same numbers. Check out the pic.
I did some measuring and I think I may have got the wrong ones (yay). The boxes are screwed and the reciept's no where to be found so I guess I'm stuck with them.
On the off chance these bearings are inter-changable I took some snaps and would like some opinions on if I have the wrong ones or not. I don't know too much about these so I appreciate any input.
Lewie.
Forgot a pic!
They are the correct part numbers for disc brake rear ends.
The last picture where you have the ruler in the axle housing, you have the ruler against what appears to be a lip, that is a spacer ring that needs to be there for the disc brakes.
The bearings should fit.
Just had a thought! Check out the diagram below. Does the order from the center of the diff go:
collar - oil seal - bearing?
or
collar - bearing - oil seal?
I'm confused!
Any ideas on the picture above. I have a pretty good idea but I can't understand why I would get a bearing packed with grease and then have an oil seal go on the outside the bearing from the middle. I keep thinking I would need an oil seal to protect the diff oil from getting to the greased bearing and then another to stop enerything from leaking out. But why was that not part of the kit???
Please help. The vein on my forehead is getting bigger.

didnt you take the old ones off?
The bottom one.
Oil seal.
Bearing.
Collar.
The seal goes on so that the part that seals on the axle is to the outer part of the axle.
If this was the wheel {} then the seal goes like this [ .
yeh true coz if there was no seal oil would go all over your brakes
Great. Thanks gurus. Much appreciated

Next problem. As above I have a 10 Bolt Salisburyand I'm in the final stages of collecting bits and pieces to put it on. One piece left. Drive Shaft. I did a quick measure and on the salisbury the part that bolts to the driveshaft is larger than the drive shaft currently on my car (where the u-bolts go)
Does anyone know if I can keep the front half of my drive shaft and change the back half to suit? Or do I neet to replace the whole thing?
Everything is standard trimatic 202 blue straight 6. 1983 VH fully sick Commodore.
