hey guys, just bought a VK with the old 4 speed manual in her... throughout 1st 2nd and 3rd she has a really loud whiring or almost grinding noise. i bought it off a mate at work who worked for holden for over 15 yrs and reckons all VK 4 speeds are noisy as boxes... is this true or is there a way it can be fixed?
cheers!!
nah its true they are pretty noisy
haha she sounds like a truck til it hits 4th gear!! considering packing the bearings with lithium grease to see if that'll work..
yeh check the shifter make sure its going into gear properly those 4 speed shifters are prone to ****ing them selves
haha how do i get onto that?? im used to auto VS's and VL's which i never had to play with much. lol
take out the centre console take off the rubber boot and just check and make sure its not all loose if its loose its most likly your shifter but if not theres nothing wrong with it
haha alright cheers. might go suss it out tonight![]()
My mate just bought a VK the other day with a 202 4spd behind it. It was the MC6 torquemaster. It was noisy as. We told him to check the trans oil coz it's prolly low, and the thrust bearing was noisy too. He checked the oil the next day and it had about 2 drops in it (it was sitting for a year or so b4 he bought it, and when he bought it him and his mates were thrashing it around....with no oil haha). They filled it up again but it all ran out the front of the bellhousing lol.
Only thing it could of been I thought was the gasket or oil seal stuffed in the input shaft bearing retainer....so we pulled the motor and box out, and turns out the bearing retainer was half off, all 4 bolts were half out literally. No gasket was available for the retainer so ended up making one, bought a new oil seal, and rung every auto shop in town for a thrust bearing but nobody had one in stock (altho sprints said they did, but went to get it and turns out it has been misplaced or sumfin coz they couldn't find it). So had to settle with getting one ordered in. Picked it up the next day so we put everything back together and dropped the motor and box back into the car, filled it up with oil (didn't leak a drop). Took it for a spin but it's still a bit noisy. Only thing I can put it down to is the abuse it got while having no oil in the trans lol.
To get the shifter out (if it's an MC6 which I assume it is), take ur console out and remove the rubber boots. Then around the top of the trans where the shifter goes in, there will either be a clip around it holding the shifter assembly in, or 2 screws on the side. My bro's VH had an MC6 and had the clip around the outside, but my mate's VK had 2 screws. It's pretty much impossible to get the 2 screws out due to the floor pan (unless u have some sort of ratchet with a phillips head bit), so I ended up having to unbolt the top of the box, the section which holds the shifter assembly in place. It's 3 bolts and will pull straight out.
