    Could also be rockers...maybe they need adjusting. The red motors don't have the self adjusting rockers.

    Nah I don't mean the lifters (they were all hydraulic). The rockers on top of the motor. The blue motors ya just torque them up and they should be good, but the red motors ya gotta adjust them one by one I rekon. Not sure how it's done coz never really worked on a red 6.

    if its anything like getting zero lash on rollers then its a bit harder than that;

    1. you gotta turn the engine till the lifter you want is seated. crane suggest to rotate the engine till the opposite valve is at full lift so you are guaranteed the one your adjusting will be fully closed.
    2. loosen off the rocker till the pushrod spins freely
    3. with one hand turning the pushrod clockwise and anti clockwise and the other on the adjusting nut, keep tightening the adjuster till you feel the pushrod 'grab'. the rod will get harder to turn progressivley, but zero lash is actually when it stops turning.
    4. turn the adjusting nut another half a turn then tighten it up.

    i hope its the same.

    Ok, with red 202s, you just torque them up, no adjusting what so ever. Now, the ticking, it might be pinging, pinking, what ever you want to call it. This is due to running unleaded fuel and not adjusting the timing.

    You might need to set the lifter preload. There were two types of rockers on the red motors. The earlier ones had adjustable rockers that had to be tightened until you couldn't feel any sideways movement in them when that cylinder was at top dead centre then tighten them a further quarter of a turn.
    The later red motors have the same rockers as a blue or black motor and the lifter preload can be set by grinding the bottoms of the rocker pedestals down or adding washers to get it right. You need to get the cylinder at top dead centre so both valves are fully closed to check the preload which should be between 30 to 40 thou. Next you loosen the rocker pedestal bolts and check the gap between the bottom of the pedestal ( the aluminium part) and the head. Once you have got the gap there right by either filing or grinding down the pedestal or adding washers then you tighten the bolts up again and move on to the next cylinder.
