    Default 1983 VH SL Gearbox

    Hey all,

My girlfriend has a 1983 Holden VH SL with a Blue 202, She is wanting to put in a B&M shifter in it, It's automatic and I am just wondering how I would go about it? An idea of what shifter ill be able to get for her birthday and what gearbox it would have or how i would find out what gearbox the car has from the plates in the engine bay.

    Any help would be great....

    Thanks,
    Nathan

i know bugger all about 202's but am pretty sure its a trimatic auto. and the B&M shifter has instructions in the box i think

there is a guy on here who got rid of his center console and replaced it with the B&M shifter surround and a fire extinguisher and i have to say it looks awesome.

definately a trimatic, you can pretty much put any B&M auto shifter, most have the adjustment to use it on a 3 or 4 speed box, you'll have to get underneath to set the linkages, you can get a few console mount ones that look neat in her existing console, just out of interest, why does she want it for, just to have the ratchet or for looks or is the car worked or getting worked?

Pro Ratchets are one of the best I reckon, as long as she isnt going to get over the ratchet for every gear. You cant go straight from P-D, you have to hold the lock out switch to get out of park and ratchet back three times. Same to get it into park.

    Here's the bracket ya need.
TRIMATIC LINKAGE BRACKET FOR B&M AND HURST SHIFTERS - eBay V8, Performance Parts, Car Parts, Accessories, Cars, Bikes, Boats. (end time 20-Aug-09 21:55:49 AEST)

And when ya buy the B&M shifter it should come with a cable I rekon. My bro's did.

Here's a pic of his using the standard console. Obviously it can be done a lot neater, but he just hacked it up to see if it would fit b4 he went and done it to his new console.

Isnt that a quicksilver, the pro ratchet has the second lever to the left of park, brackets will come with them as long as you are buying them new and you state for a trimatic.

Thanks heaps for all the info, i dont think she will get over it but we shall see, she better not get over it.... yeah getting it new from American Autos here in sydney so it should come with it all... so to get it into gear out of park you pull down on it 3 times and that little red leaver/button looking thing will move down to the gear needed and to put it back into park push up and that red leaver/button will move up to park is that correct Shifty?

Yeah, basically with that one each movement will move one spot, you cant go straight to D, you'll get used to it, they are the best auto shifter out of the B&M's IMO, how much all up is it?
