Knock the back plate off and have a look inside, look at the condition of the teeth, gear ratio, colour of oil etc.

Just thought I'd ask, how did u determine they were a 10 bolt? Ya didn't count the bolts on the back of the back plate did ya?

Also, I meant the compliance plates....if they are original diffs, they'll tell ya wat gearing they are. But yeah other then that ya can only pull the back plate off and check the markings on the crown wheel.

if it is a 10 bolt one side of the backing plate will be shaped like a football

there are 'big' ten bolts and 'little' ones and the backing plates are different, but they are both V8 i believe.

    willing to be corrected.

There's the 8 bolt and the 10 bolt. 8 bolts are behind the 6's and 253's, and the 10 bolts are behind the 308's. The 8 bolts have a rounder looking back plate, while the 10 bolts are egg shaped.

the 6cyl SLE fitted with heavy duty suspension also had the 10bolt diffs.

if you have a look at the steel collar that sits around the input yoke it may have the diff ratio stanmped on it.

failing that remove the rear cover and rotate the crown wheel untill the numbers on the crown wheel appears, it should have the ratio stamped on it. failing that count the teeth.

diff ratio also depends on the engine and trans combo the car came with. for example the SLE with trimatic came with a 2.6:1 diff ratio, great for cruising but crap for a quick take off.

yeh i can vouch for that my car came out with a 308-trimatic-10 bolt 2.6 ratio was great for crusing but take off was terrible it is now fitted with a vlt 3.45 ratio diff uses more fuel but takes off like a rocket so im happy
