Default Black 202 Carby - Bye, Bye EST

    Howdy Guys,

I fitted a recon Varajet from Sue's Carbys a month or so ago and just couldn't get the old girl running sweet. Booked into the local old skool mechanics today and man, was it worth it! Secondary now comes into play, choke sorted and mixture set correctly.

    One problem tho...

While I was there, he mentioned how much better the old EST donks run with the EST junked and the Vac Advanced distributor fitted. He proceded to show me a reconed one that has been remapped to run on Premium Unleaded (21 degrees advance or some such). $240 is what he was asking for it.

Now I've been wanting to do this for ages and have seen 2nd hand Electronic Dissys going from around the $130 mark.

Is the remapped/reconed one the go?
    Is this price resonable?

The shop remaps them on site and it looked nice and clean - plastic cog on it tho.

    Thoughts?

$240 is about right for a reco one with a cusom remapping. No idea on the advance, but that doesnt sound right to me.
can pick up the dissy for $50 from wreckers etc. You only needs the dissy to get rid of the EST, you replace the Rotor cap, rotor button etc whilst your doing it (they should be replaced anyway).

The actual conversion is a piece of piss, sing out if you need help though.

Thanks for the quick reply Tom.

The 21 degrees was written on a tag on the dissy, so may have nothing to do with it.

My EST and vaccum are working fine atm, got them all sorted. I just think it makes sense to be able to have some control over the advance and timing.

I guess I just need a nudge to spend the 240 fun tickets.

21 degrees could be its maximum advance or something, but you set them at around 10 degrees at idle (8 - 12 is good).
Im suprised the EST is working fine, you are a first to say that lol. Ok I can quickly justify $240 after the trouble I had. I spent nearly a year trying to make my EST reliable, probably 150+ on various sensors, rewiring shit. $40 on different computers. I also got towed home 5 times, and spent a few hours waiting for the EST to reset it self at times, if my tows wernt free, I would imagine there would be over a grand just on that. So after all the time and effort I put into the EST I still had a touchy system that would just stop sparking for no other reason then it felt like it. Put the Electronic Dissy in (I used a VK EFI one) and never had a single problem after that.
I found the EST would "run on" if it wasnt ran on Premium, running the other dissy, you can adjust the timing to suit either petrol.

I was told to use a VK EFI dissy as they are suppose to have a better advance curve over the blue motor ones. I paid $50 for mine, so if you cant justify $240 thats another option.

    Haha.

Tom, I joined this forum a week after buying my VK (six months ago) and your posts about all the "fun" you had with your EST scared me shitless. Been hunting a replacement dissy since. =D

I might walk in next week and wave $200 under his nose and see what happens.

Haha, Yeah my EST hatred ramblings are every where, did I mention the fuel economy I was getting with the EST

Yeah may aswell see what he says, either way its a worth the money in my eyes, but if yours is working fine then you have time to shop around to.

the graph really isnt that relevant unless you got a cam. stock graphs are pretty good.

prob because the thermo isnt as efficient cooling your engine, I used to fit thermos in winter to my VK and the original fan back on for summer, used to take about an hour to do the swap in the end. best thing to do is to ditch the EST and just fit an electronic dizzy
