Hey guys, I've got a vc L series sittin' on the farm with a blue 202 and 4 speed, and it won't start. I've redone the timing, probably not the right way... and when I try to start it, it will try to turn over once than die. If I try to turn it on again it just clicks at me. I've listened to the 'click' and it almost sounds like something opening and closing... Any ideas on what I should/can do to get this thing to start? I've got a fresh battery in it and I've tried jumpstarting it.

sounds like flat battery mate.. try puttin power straight to the starter with jumper leads and see what happens
I'm sure it's not a flat battery, but I will try your suggestion. Although I am a complete newb when it comes to cars and will need to be told where the starter motor is....

i would say bettery too. starter is towards the back of the engine on the ... passenger? side. i dont know 202's soz.
p.s. jumper cables are usually crap. make sure you didnt get them from k-mart. if you did you will need about 3 sets of them all working at the same time to start something thats been sitting for ages.
it would pay you to do a quick connection check of your terminals, make sure they are clean and tight. then check that your earth lead is secure to the side of the engine, and your starter lead is tight and clean.
yer i would look at the bettery 1st too.
how did you do the timing? and was it runing when u got it???
ari: yeah I'll give that all a check again. It all seemed okay last time, but you never can tell, right?
gaz: Yeah, it was my grandma's daily that was given to the family for a paddock basher. Dad took the dizzy cap off to try on a mate's hz ute, it had a red dizzy and no oil change in 18months, I recently put the cap back and did the timing using a guide from holdenpaedia, although I probably did it wrong...

throw some 'start ya barstad' down the carby.
I stuck the battery on charger about an hour ago , but am thinking I might have to bite the bullet and ask dad for help (mechanic for 16 years).

Try tapping the starter motor a couple of times with something as the solenoid might be stuck.
Hey everyone, I got the car started today. I whacked the starter motor and took the motor out of my dad's vn ss (and charged it) and put it in. The car now starts, but is missing A plug lead so she's running a little rough. Thanks for everyone's suggestions and help.

i am amazed to this day by that trick. i swear to god, you have no idea how many old girls i have done that on and IT WORKS!!! i would NEVER recomend hitting anything on a car, especially something electrical, but by christ it does work.
the other one is when starters seize from over heating, pour a bucket of water all over the side with the starter and it usually jumps to life straight away. ot, soz
