Default Fuel Consumption on a V8

    Hi guys,

I'm searching for either a VL or VK calais. I love the look of the VK calais and was just wondering what the fuel consumption would be in a 308 with a trimatic. My main concern is that I'm going to have to drive from Newcastle to Darwin in a few months and haven't had much experience with a trimatic on the highway, and I cant imagine their consumption rate would be too good. If I could get 500 km out of the tank on the highway, I would probably choose the VK.

    Cheers,
    Dan

but if you buy a standard vk 5.0 it should have a 260 ratio diff or 278 which will bring down the consumption

you would think so hey? thats what i thought till i drove to QLD and back in mine. stock+extractors, holley 600 DP traumatic and 260 highway diff. average was 300kms per 40 litres. we kept stopping on the last quarter of the tank cos' we hit a town that was completely closed and no fuel (xmas day) and nearly ran her dry.

but yeah, dreaming if you think you will get 500. daily city driving now on mine (modded) is 200km pr tank 65 bucks to fill PULP. if the engine didnt sounds as kewl as it does it wouldve been sold a year ago. sadly, im addicted

Yea 500 k's is what the guy who was trying to sell me one said, obviously BS. I think I'm getting attracted by the idea of another project, but since I have two torries on the go atm don't think it would be a wise choice as a daily.

It will depend on how you drive it of course, how much load you have and if you use the A/C or not. At best (small load, no A/C, easy on the throttle and no hills!) you may get 350 - 380km's on a stock tank.

I once got 450+ km's out of my VH SL 4.2 aussie four speed once on a trip to Queensland from Sydney (New England hwy) but that's a whole other story....

My Wagon was shocking on fuel. VK 304/trimatic. I assume it was the stock diff, but i couldn't be sure. But even driving around town i'd barely get 300 to a tank.

Yeah my VH is a shocker too, stock trimatic (have headers) but around town you can almost watch the fuel guage move. Better on the open road but not great, she's old....even with only 150,000 km's on the clock!
