Ok, So I will give you the story first, then please give me you honest opinion,
My Vh 253 was having some issues and the engine was pretty worn, Then a "mate" offered me a "rebuilt, Mild 253"
So i took him up on the offer and spent most of my cash,
I then found myself with a short block with 40thou over pistons and heads that were supposedly early 308 heads(same valve size as 253) with an early manifold...
I just spent 4 days swapping everything over and putting the engine together, then making it run just to find that i have white/blue smoke pouring out the breathers in the rocker covers and less than average power when i put the foot down...
I spent all of my money on this and it doesn't look like i am going to get it back anytime soon...
I start back at work on the 4th and at this stage it look like i wont have a car to get there...
Can someone let me know what this might be and if there is a cheap(or free) way to fix this asap?
Or any other ideas that might get me out of trouble for now...
Any ideas will be appreciated...
Just a Small update,
Turns out the manifold may be a "holden L34 torana 308 red motor 4 barrel manifold"
The heads had a hole for the egr setup but i didn't take any notice if the manifold blocked it off or not...
Also the heads wouldn't take the blue motor manifold...(not enough holes)
Going over in the morning to rip the manifold off and see if there was any exhaust gas leaking into the crank case
And yes i know all about EPA stuff... If they want to pay for it i will put it on... Beside My carbon footprint is bigger now, and you know what they say about people with big feet...
putting anything other than the right egr port manifold will leak gas into the valley undoubtedly, no need to take the manifold off to find that out. your vacuum will be going spastic, cooking your oil, blowby gasses leaking out everywhere.
you need to take a step back and get the right manifold. stock manifolds for black motors are a dime a dozen (i assume its black cos' you said the blue didnt have enough holes, red is no egr one bolt, blue is L port egr with one bolt, black is square egr with two bolts) pop down to the wreckers and pick one up for 50 bucks. if they want more than that you can have mine for 50 but you gotta come collect :P
wanna buy a realy good 308 then??
tht would fix ever thing
I have couple of spare egr manifolds to suit black motor 308
Floor it and swerve driving skool
Thank you to all, especially ari666,
I had a real mate come over with me today to suss some things out and yes there was exhaust gas in the valley,
He GAVE me an eddolbrock torker manifold on the condition i got an adapter plate for the carb and gave him the l34 manifold...
So the issue was solved at the cost of $40...
The car is now running better than ever but there is an odd noise now and then and 1 rocker cover that didn't want to seal, but i'm not too worried about it at the moment, at least i have a running car before the end of the year.
thankyou again and have a good new years ;-)
duuuude... i have been looking for a torquer to suit black engines forever! any chance you would be interested in a swap for a 1 year old looked after dual plane edelbrock performer and some cash to sweeten the deal?
oh, and the rocker cover thing is just what your gonna have to put up with. the only answer i have found to leaking rockers on these old heads is a tonne of RTV silicone
Hmmmm, i was looking for a torquer for my VH but i think i'll be getting TP manifold now. torquer is a fussy manifold i hear and works best on a high revving motor as it has large short runners. although anythings gotta be better then the DP performer me thinks
