my 3.3L black SL wagon has it, factory optioned back in 1984. take a look at the wreckers or evilbay for the components. just make sure its has been modified/converted to take R-134A Gas. Cars Pre-1993? i think had the old R-11/12 gas which is no longer available.

i wouldnt get one from the wreckers personally. if you want it to work then itll need to be new stuff or at the very least reco'd. too many variables to go wrong, the compressor, radiator, and even tubing insulation would need to be new, i guess you could get away with an old condenser. the only thing is i dont know if they run on the new gas, whats it called RS1350 or something. anyway the new gas has no chroloflorocarbons (spelling?) in it.

i think from 1993 all cars had to run with the new gas. so if you go and put an old system in, dont be too surprised if the gas guy wont recharge it.

the only things they do to retrofit an R12 system to the newer R134a gas is to replace the o'rings & oil to suit the new gas, and replace the receiver dryer (which you have to do anyway with a system that has been opened). Sometimes they might replace the tx valve as well to suit the higher pressures required for R134a, but not always.

All I'd suggest when buying parts is to make sure the compressor ports have been sealed off, or at least covered, likewise with the condensor & evaporator or you could end up with blockages and/or foreign material floating around in the system doing untold damage. The only new parts you can buy now is the compressor, condensor & receiver drier, so you are going to be stuck with buying the rest second hand.

I'm in the process of hooking up A/C to my SS. I grabbed the evaporator core/box from the last car, bought a second hand compressor, metal pipes from the wrecker, a new condensor & receiver drier, new tx valve (to suit 134a).

$10 for the metal pipes from the wrecker. Just going to clean them up with some aluminium cleaner.
$200 for a second hand VR V8 compressor (EFI 5L under the bonnet)
$150 for a new universal fit condensor (core is much finer than original - ie more surface area more efficient cooling)
    $60 for a new receiver/drier
    $50 for a high/low pressure switch
$150 for a new 134a tx valve from some European car
    $130 new condensor fan (Supercheap)

rubber hoses yet to be made up
evaporator case/core & A/C switch I removed from my last VH before I sold it

probably cost me somewhere between $1000-1500 all up to get it running

How did you go fitting the universal fit condensor? Would any of the original metal pipework line up? I'm guessing it wouldn't. I'm guessing you'll just mount everything where it fits and have custom rubber hoses made up to fit?
    Four commodores and counting.

the VH factory air used a universal fit condensor anyway, so they are fairly much a straight fit. I think the only difference is one fitting is a flare joint instead of an o'ring joint or vice-versa.
Otherwise all the pipes are in the same spot, and it's a straight fit. Just ask an A/C specialist for a condensor to suit a VH.

Much finer core though, which is good
