I spent about $3500 on my 173...here's a list of wat was done.

    Blue 173 2.85L inline 6.
    - Bored out 130thou to a 186 3.0L.
    - Chemically cleaned block.
    - Fully balanced up bottom end.
    - Flat top pistons.
    - JP Straight cut timing gears.
    - JP Oil pump.
    - New fuel pump.
    - New waterpump.
    - New starter motor.
    - New alternator.
    - Rebuilt Varajet carby.
    - Motavator extractors.
    - New lifters.
    - Crow cam.
    - Crow valve springs.
    - High compression 173 head, shaved a further 10thou.
    - All new ACL rings, bearings and MonoTorque gaskets.
    - New harmonic balancer.
    - New Top Gun gloss yellow 8.8mm Pro Racing Series leads.
    - Shaved flywheel.

Was a waste of money IMO. Was a good project to learn from.....but would never spend that much on a Holden 6 again. I sold it for about $1500, hadn't even ran it in yet.

You could spend the same sort of money on putting a V6 in it and have similar power as standard. You could always leave the 202 in it while you're on your p's...do up the rest of the car and buy all the gear to put an 8 in it when you're off your p's. Rebuild it and tidy everything up so when you get off your ps you can drop it straight in. *shrugs* I'm putting a V6 in my VC wagon.

I just rebuilt one for my vc. Just did the 1000km oil change. Nothing too exciting, I bought the engine and it had been bored out 60 thou already so I just freshened it up, all new bearings, rings, gaskets etc. New coat of paint. I have a head with a lot of work done to it that I was going to put on it, but it needed roller rockers which I didn't feel like forking out for. So it runs a fairly standard head, stage 2 megatork cam, extractors, stock inlet manifold. I have a weber carby to go on it as well. Also did a manual conversion to the car - helps a lot, but I still need to change the diff as its way too tall - 2.78 auto gears.
It goes alright so far, its no rocket ship but for what it is, and considering I built it, I think it goes alright.
You can take a 202 as far as you like, but if you want reasonable power easily from one boost is the best way to go I think. Obviously no good when you're on your P's though. I've only got 6 months left on my P's - so a supercharged 202 is on the cards for me.
But for P platers I'd say the best bet is a vk efi 202 with an aftermarket ecu or delco conversion, and manual box behind it.
    Four commodores and counting.

i have a 202 blue in the shed its been bored 30thou was running 350 holley and extractors with mild head work really made sfa difference power wise so i stopped there did help it rip a mean skid though so im guessing it built the touque up a little cost me around $500 with a mate doing most of the work for beer lol thinking about giving it a freshen up and putting it in an old torrie or something with vk injection and 5 spd supra box

I threw mine in the bin, and yes it was worth it.

Price? didn't cost anything to throw out, but I'd spent about 2500 on it previously.

yeah, i reckon a 253 would have a better drag coefficient due to its size/shape/weight. but still, beggers cant be choosers and if you only have the 202, well, you just have to make do.

well the bigpaw was designed with ol' girls in mind. 500 cubes of pure jizzy-ness. im pretty sure with 750HP you could get a better time than 10...

i dropped a very worked 186 in my vh. its was fun but for 4 grand u could get alot more power from another engine... its got roughly 200hp which is the same as a stock ecotec so imo waste of money

i do have a soft spot for those motors tho

There's a bloke in the latest street machine, in the summernats article, with a hr ute. Its got a 202 running a B&M 144 and a gm 4/71. Would not be a cheap set up but its certainly something different, and I'm its putting down some reasonable figures.

That sounds sick. Picked up SM today and there is that beauty on the front...

The reason i gave the shovel a workout on this thread is cause im thinking of maybe doing something to my 202. but still p plate worthy..

Maybe a new head, pistons, and rollers??

    Or stroke it HEHE!!!

    LOL. maybe...................

Nah, I only rebuilt the last one, and that died in spectacular fashion!
The other three were just plain bad luck.
The third one went halfway between rochy and echuca, was making a hell of a noise before i parked it!

i thought all that stuff made it un-p-plate-able (a new word... i like it!)

roller rockers are great value. especially if you get a slightly higher ration, your getting valvelift for free headwork is also great, pistons are great stroking is great.

    but:

how long are you gonna be on your p's

how much money are you going to waste on the 202

how long after your p's have exired will it be before you want a V8 and have to start all over again?

    edit* forgot you were 15...

    Hi

they may make it un-p-plate-able but im not 100% sure on it..

im pretty sure heads and rockers are fine and pistons/stroke can't been seen so that makes it hard to find.

look, id be willing to waste 1K on it give or take, just as a little thrash around for the p's.

#1 on my list would probably be a manual box and EFI possibly..,

    What would you recommend?

and how could anyone forget im 15... lol, im 16 in 21 days
