Default Difference between TH400 and trimatic

    Hey everyone,
Was just wondering whether someone could tell me how to tell the difference between a TH400 and a trimatic?

trimatic smaller/lighter/weaker/simpler/better for up to 300HP, 400 bigger/heavier/stronger/cheper on parts/good for anything really. the bell housing bolt holes are in different locations and the crank has a different end for each.

turbos are fatter and wider. there is a build plate on the passenger side which will give it away. trimatics body is quite thin, opening out to a wide bellhousing so it looks pretty flared. any chance you could paost a pic?

    this is a turbo 400:

i think an easy way to tell is the two tranny lines are right next to each other on the drivers side of the turbo 400 and the trimatic they are spaced out somehow. been ages since i looked at either.

yeah bellhousing one piece i think. i remember the guy who bought the one in the pic spent a few minutes tapping the body with a spanner, useless effort since i listed it as condition unknown. i think he just wanted to show he knew something about them.

Try finding one in NSW....... except mine of course!

Almost every part I have bought on e-bay for my VH came from Victoria (and I have bought a few!). There doesn't seem to be many left in NSW - sigh.

There was a mint maroon two tone VH SLE in Penola a couple months back for sale, I think it would still be for sale. If you want one bad enough they aren't hard to find/get

Yeah they are around but I mean the original low kilometre 5.0 SL/E's are becoming harder to find. You know the one owner old guy type that has been sitting in the garage doing nothing for the past 20 years ones - less than 150 or even 100k's on the clock (mine is just ticking over 150's, sigh, sheds a tear....) and fully optioned up etc, the real collector type. 4.2's are still a dime a dozen. The six packs don't even come into the equation as far as I'm concerned.

I did see however a few months back an original VB SL/E 5.0 in South Aus with only 26,000 k's on the clock (yeah, not a typo I mean 26,000!!!). Was mint and asking $12k for it, if I was in a position to buy at the time I would have walked to S.A to get it ....... (I believe it sold fairly quickly).

Yeah I was seriously jealous of the dude (or dudette!) who bought it - it fair dinkum looked as though it just drove out of the showroom. Still, a VK with only 120k's is pretty bl*ody good, well done!

Anyway, don't mean to highjack your thread mate - we were talking about TH400's yeah?!
